This thesis deals with the analysis of crack propagation in a geometrically simple body and the subsequent calculation of its residual life. The finite element method in Code_Aster software's Salome_Meca environment is employed as the primary tool for determining the crack growth behaviour. Analytical calculations have been performed in order to verify the numerically obtained results. Furthermore, both approaches were compared and the differences discussed. It has been established that their disparities are negligible up to the vicinity of the crack's critical half-length. As a final result, the number of cycles of cyclic loading required to reach that critical value has been calculated.
