This thesis deals with the design of a compliant structure for the trailing edge of a wing, function of which, is based on the elastic deformation of thin bending elements. The aim was to verify whether a smooth change in the curvature of the airfoil could be used as an alternative to a simple hinged flap, with particular attention given to the mechanical feasibility, manufacturability and aerodynamic benefit of the proposed solution. Based on a comparison of conceptual approaches, a compliant mechanism consisting of a system of rigid segments connected by serpentine compliant joints was selected. The shape of the joints was parameterized using its geometrical parameters and subsequently evaluated by the finite element method. The applicability of the numerical model was supported by experimental measurements of selected specimens and by comparing their deformation behaviour with the simulation results. The final design was then evaluated in terms of achievable deformation, stress state and aerodynamic properties. The results showed that the deformation was concentrated mainly in the serpentine joints, while the rigid segments remained deformed only to a small extent. For the required bending deformation, the FEM analysis indicated a maximum stress of approximately 172 MPa, which is below the considered allowable fatigue limit of the Ti6Al4V material. The aerodynamic analysis demonstrated an increase in the maximum lift coefficient from 1,66 for the straight airfoil to 2,47 for the deformed airfoil. At the same time, higher aerodynamic efficiency than that of the simple hinged flap model was achieved in the range of low and medium angles of attack. The proposed solution therefore suggests that compliant mechanisms may provide a suitable basis for the design of morphing wing trailing edges with a smooth change in airfoil geometry.
