Percepce střední středové samohlásky /ə/ u českých a francouzských studentů angličtiny jako cizího jazyka

This bachelor thesis investigates the perception of the English reduced mid-central vowel schwa by Czech and French learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). The theoretical part discusses second-language speech perception, cross-linguistic influence, and differences between the Czech and French vowel systems, with particular attention to reduced vowels. It also examines the role of English schwa and its French counterpart, e caduc, within their respective phonological systems. The practical part is based on a perception test examining the recognition of schwa in isolated lexical items and in connected speech. The aim was to find out whether French learners, whose native language contains a phonetically similar vowel, would perceive schwa more accurately than Czech learners, whose native language lacks reduced vowels as standard phonemic units. The results showed that both groups performed at a comparable level, and the expected advantage of French learners was not confirmed. KEYWORDS speech perception, schwa, L1 transfer, Czech, French
