Disertační práce zkoumá chemii jako vědu a výrobní odvětví na základě praktik členů Lunar Society of Birmingham v přibližném časovém rozmezí let 1770-1800. Důraz je kladen na otázku, nakolik činnost této skupiny splňovala kritéria normální vědy podle soudobých i současných teorií vědy. V tomto duchu se zaměřuje se na analýzu jednotlivých prvků, kterými se věda vyznačuje. Práce sleduje, jak členové této společnosti - vědci, podnikatelé i technici - přispívali k rozvoji vědeckého poznání prostřednictvím praktik normální vědy (výzkumného programu, teorie, experimentů, vědeckého kolektivu, terminologie, sdílení poznatků a aplikace výsledků v průmyslové praxi). Práce zároveň hodnotí význam Lunar Society v utváření chemie jako vědní disciplíny a zařazení jejich aktivit na poli chemie do rámce teorie vědy. This dissertation examines chemistry as a science and an industrial sector based on the practices of the members of the Lunar Society of Birmingham in the approximate period 1770-1800. Emphasis is placed on the extent to which the activities of this group met the criteria of normal science according to both contemporary and modern theories of science. In this context, the thesis analyses the individual elements that characterize science. It explores how the members of this society - scientists, entrepreneurs, and technicians - contributed to the development of scientific knowledge through the practices of normal science (research program, theory, experiments, scientific community, terminology, knowledge sharing, and the application of results in industrial practice). The thesis also evaluates the significance of the Lunar Society in shaping chemistry as a scientific discipline and situates their activities within the framework of the philosophy of science.
