Navigating "Otherness": Czech Travelers and the Discovery of the Balkans (1848-1918) Davor Pavičić, MA Abstract This dissertation examines Czech travel writing on the Balkans from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, focusing on the ways in which political change, imperial frameworks, and cultural hierarchies shaped travelers' perceptions of the region. Drawing on a broad corpus of published travelogues, the study analyzes how Czech authors described the Balkans in the context of Ottoman decline and the emergence of modern nation-states. The dissertation argues that Czech travel writing cannot be understood through a simple opposition between imperial and national perspectives. Instead, Czech authors articulated a layered perspective in which identification with the Habsburg imperial order coexisted with expressions of Slavic solidarity and national self-definition. These perspectives were not fixed, but shifted according to region, historical moment, and the travelers' professional and social backgrounds. Journalists, scholars, and officials approached the Balkans with different expectations and narrative strategies, producing divergent representations of the same spaces.
