V meste Marsaskala zaberajú pozostatky bývalého letoviska najvýchodnejší bod polostrova – výraznú jazvu na inak dychberúcej krajine. Obdobie, ktoré som strávil životom na Malte, mi umožnilo byť svedkom zvláštnej dichotómie tohto miesta: jeho nepopierateľného potenciálu verzus súčasného stavu opustenosti. Tento projekt sa snaží si tento horizont opäť podmaniť. Navrhnutím nového hotelového rezortu prispôsobeného špecificky environmentálnemu a sociálnemu kontextu Marsaskaly táto diplomová práca skúma, ako môže moderná architektúra premeniť zanedbané miesto na symbol omladenia. Vychádzajúc z tohto osobného pozorovania, projekt sa opiera o analýzy vykonané počas predchádzajúceho semestra, ktoré sa zamerala na konkrétne obmedzenia lokality aj na vyvíjajúce sa požiadavky hotelového sektora. Tento výskum odhalil jasnú potrebu odkloniť sa od predimenzovanej, monolitickej typológie minulosti. Vízia tohto nového plážového rezortu je preto zakorenená v urbanistickej citlivosti; navrhovaná architektúra zámerne prijíma menšiu, fragmentovanejšiu mierku, ktorá zrkadlí tradičnú mestskú štruktúru Marsaskaly. Na rozdiel od súčasnej stavby, ktorá pôsobí ako vizuálna a fyzická bariéra, sa tento návrh snaží rozpustiť hranicu medzi súkromným rezortom a verejným priestorom. Ambícia projektu presahuje rámec luxusného pohostinstva a má slúžiť ako dôležitý prínos pre komunitu. Integráciou vybraného mixu luxusného ubytovania s vybavenosťou prístupnou verejnosti – vrátane butikov, kaviarní, barov a prestížnych reštaurácií – je rezort navrhnutý tak, aby sa stal pulzujúcim miestnym centrom a vyhľadávanou destináciou sám o sebe. Táto strategická integrácia zabezpečuje, že development nie je izolovanou enklávou, ale funkčným predĺžením mesta, ktoré podporuje sociálnu interakciu. Revitalizácia polostrova má navyše pôsobiť ako významný ekonomický motor, ktorý vytvorí rôznorodé nové pracovné príležitosti a zabezpečí udržateľnú budúcnosť pre komunitu v Marsaskale.
In the of Marsaskala, the remains of a former resort occupy the peninsula’s easternmost point a prominent scar on an otherwise breathtaking landscape. My time living in Malta allowed me to witness the strange dichotomy of this site: its undeniable potential versus its current state of abandonment. This project seeks to reclaim that horizon. By designing a new hotel resort specifically tailored to the environmental and social context of Marsaskala, this thesis explores how modern architecture can transform a site of neglect into a landmark of rejuvenation. Building upon this personal observation, the project is underpinned by a comprehensive analysis conducted during the previous semester, focusing on both the specific constraints of the site and the evolving requirements of the global hotel sector. This research revealed a clear necessity to deviate from the oversized, monolithic typology of the past. Consequently, the vision for this new beach resort is rooted in urban sensitivity; the proposed architecture intentionally adopts a smaller, more fragmented scale that mirrors the traditional urban grain of Marsaskala. Unlike the current structure, which acts as a visual and physical barrier, this design seeks to dissolve the boundary between the private resort and the public realm. The ambition of the project extends beyond high-end hospitality to serve as a vital community asset. By integrating a curated mix of luxury accommodation with public-facing amenities—including boutique shops, cafes, bars, and signature restaurants—the resort is designed to become a vibrant local hot spot and a destination in its own right. This strategic integration ensures that the development is not an isolated enclave, but a functional extension of the town that fosters social interaction. Furthermore, the revitalization of the peninsula aims to act as a significant economic driver, generating diverse new job opportunities and providing a sustainable future for the Marsaskala community.
