This bachelor’s thesis examines the microstructure, mechanical, and tribological properties of a steel casting of a mining excavator tooth. In the experimental section, optical emission spectroscopy was used to determine the chemical composition, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the proportion of retained austenite. Using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the basic martensitic matrix was characterized, and technological defects such as porosity and non-metallic inclusions were identified. Hardness measurements, together with microscopy, revealed the presence of an undesirable surface decarburized layer across the cross-section. Tribological properties were evaluated using a Ball-on-Plate test.
