This thesis focuses on modeling and control of an irrigation system that simulates the vertical movement of water within a soil profile. The thesis is based on the Richards equation describing water flow in soil, extended by Gardner's model for relative soil permeability and Feddes' concept for modeling the root water uptake. Based on this, a mathematical model that integrates the effects of current atmospheric conditions, evapotranspiration, and the interaction between physical processes of water movement in the soil and biological processes related to plant water uptake was developed. The model was discretized along the z-axis, resulting in a system of ordinary differential equations formulated in a state-space representation. Appropriate initial and boundary conditions were determined based on Darcy’s law, capturing the behavior of water at both the surface and the bottom of the soil profile. Simulations were conducted to observe system responses under various soil and climatic scenarios. Based on the developed model, a control algorithm was designed using a cascade structure that combines an inner PI controller and an outer state feedback controller with an integral control action. The proposed control strategy was validated through simulations across multiple scenarios with varying soil parameters and external disturbances. The results demonstrated the controller’s ability to maintain the required average soil moisture and effectively respond to disturbances.
