cze Abstract:
. It analyzes engravings of battlefields from the Thirty Years' War by engraver Matthäus Merian the Elder, which represent the baroque illustrative norm of the 17th century, and engravings of battle plans of the battle of Chotusice 1742 and the battle of Kolín 1757, which represent the analytical and tactical norm of the 18th century. The analysis showed that there was a transformation in the depiction of military conflicts. The aesthetic record of events became a functional, measurable tool for better military use. This paradigm shift can be seen in the depiction of four main areas: military aspect, topography, altimetry and logistics. The final analysis of discrepancies, together with field research, confirmed that although 18th century engravings strove for analytical accuracy, they were limited by the technology of the time, as cartographers relied on the method of visual estimation.
