This bachelor's thesis examines the social programs of the Black Panther Party (BPP) and their impact on the African American community in the United States during the second half of the 1960s and the early 1970s. It is grounded in the socio-political context of northern urban ghettos and explores the rise of the BPP as a response to systemic discrimination and the failure of state institutions. Unlike other civil rights movements, the BPP initially rejected nonviolence and advocated for armed self-defense. The thesis focuses on the social programs through which the Party mobilized frustrated African Americans and addressed their everyday needs. These initiatives simultaneously strengthened the Party's position within the Black community and legitimized its existence under increasing government pressure. Particular attention is given to the most prominent programs, such as the Free Breakfast for Children Program, community health clinics, and sickle cell anemia testing. This work further analyzes in detail how these programs functioned, how they were financed and organized, and how they were targeted by state repression through the COINTELPRO operation. The conclusion evaluates their impact on the African American community and the broader significance of these initiatives during the BPP's existence.
