The main objectives of the thesis concern the portrayal of innocence and societal norms in 19th-century New York's elite society in the novel The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. To examine the notions of innocence and its multifaceted nature, the thesis focuses on the novel's female protagonists, particularly May Welland and Ellen Olenska, employing analysis of interpersonal interactions, symbols concerning them, observations of the story's narrator, and Newland Archer's remarks, which strongly influence the depiction of innocence and allow us to explore societal norms through the eyes of a male character. For the analysis of the consequences of societal norms, the conflicts arising in courtship and marriage are addressed. Furthermore, the thesis discusses how societal and gender norms are simultaneously upheld and subverted by the characters. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá výzkumem ztvárnění nevinnosti a vyobrazení sociálních norem newyorské vysoké společnosti pozdního devatenáctého století v díle The Age of Innocence napsaném Edith Whartonovou, přičemž k průzkumu pojetí nevinnosti využívá analýzu postav a jejich interakcí, zejména May Welland a Ellen Olenské, symbolů obsažených v tomto románu, a vypravěčových poznatků, které taktéž výrazně ovlivňují interpretaci nevinnosti a otevírají pohled na sociální normy očima mužské postavy. K analýze dopadů sociálních norem jsou dále adresovány i popisy problémů jimi způsobenými ve dvoření a manželství. Práce dále diskutuje o způsobech, kterými postavy tohoto díla současně vyzývají i udržují sociální a genderové normy oné doby.
