The content of the diploma thesis will be a comparative analysis of the fantasy stories of J.R.R. Tolkien (The Fellowship of the Ring) and J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s Stone), the aim of which will be to examine fairy tale elements and their influence on the overall tone of the stories. The first part of the thesis will introduce the fairy tale genre in its cultural, historical and theoretical context (Propp, Tolkien, Bettelheim) . Separate chapters will be devoted to the analysed authors, their work and their attitude to the function of fairy tales. The analysis itself will focus on finding specific relationships between popular fantasy series and the traditional fairy tale, its content and form (Propp) and its function (Tolkien). Attention will be paid to the role of the main and secondary characters, the significance of the environment and specific plots. Last but not least, the thesis will reflect on possible connections between the influence of the fairy tale and the ethical tone of the compared stories, including their impact on the child reader. Náplní diplomové práce bude srovnávací analýza fantastických příběhů J.R.R. Tolkiena (The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings) a J.K. Rowlingové (Harry Potter), jejímž cílem bude zkoumání pohádkových prvků a jejich vlivu na celkové vyznění příběhů. První část práce přiblíží žánr pohádky v jeho kulturně historickém a teoretickém kontextu (Propp, Tolkien, Bettelheim, Zipes, Černoušek). Samostatné kapitoly budou věnovány analyzovaným autorům, jejich tvorbě a jejich postoji k funkci pohádek. Vlastní analýza bude zaměřena na hledání konkrétních vztahů mezi populárními fantasy sériemi a tradiční pohádkou, jejím obsahem i formou (Propp) a její funkcí (Tolkien). Pozornost bude věnována úloze hlavních i vedlejších postav, významu prostředí i konkrétních zápletek. V neposlední řadě se práce zamyslí nad možnými souvislostmi mezi vlivem pohádky a etickým vyzněním srovnávaných příběhů, včetně jejich působení na dětského čtenáře.
