The main focus of the bachelor thesis is the young adult novel "The Midnight Library"(2020) by Matt Haig, emphasizing a psychological reach and its symbolism. In the beginning, the thesis will introduce the author of the novel in the context of contemporary British literature in the fantasy genre, continuing with a literary analysis of the novel with regard to psychological aspects that are connected with the subject of the work and its symbolic reaches. Part of the interpretive analysis will be a motivic analysis of the novel, characteristics of the female protagonist, her life situations, and a psychological profile in relation to the option to choose. The core of the analysis will be a chapter focusing on the fictional opportunity to choose alternative lives and fantastic worlds, the symbolism of the library, and the importance of reading book stories in comparison with the life stories of fictional characters. Part of the thesis will be a reflection on existential problematic and psychological questions about finding the meaning of life in the character´s coming of age. Předmětem zkoumání bakalářské práce je román pro mládež britského autora Matta Haiga "The Midnight Library" (2020) se zaměřením na psychologický přesah románu a jeho symbolické významy. Práce v úvodu představí autora románu v kontextu současné britské literatury žánru fantasy, a dále provede literárněvědnou analýzu románu s ohledem na psychologické aspekty, které se tematicky vztahují k námětu díla a jeho symbolickým přesahům. Součástí interpretační analýzy práce bude motivický rozbor románu, charakteristika hlavní hrdinky, její životní situace a psychologický profil ve vztahu k možnosti volby. Jádrem analýzy bude kapitola věnovaná fiktivní možnosti volby alternativních životů a fantastických světů, symbolice prostoru knihovny a významu čtení a knižních příběhů v porovnání s životními osudy fiktivních hrdinů. Součástí práce bude úvaha nad existenciální problematikou a psychologickou otázkou hledání smyslu života v období dospívaní hlavní postavy.
