This thesis analyses the role of taboos in maintaining totalitarian control in the fictional societies depicted in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. It explores various mechanisms through which complete state control is achieved and preserved by identifying the behaviours, objects, and ideas rendered taboo in the characters' daily lives. Since taboos often operate at the intersection of biological instincts and social constructs, the analysis focuses on the tension between innate human inclinations and the extent to which society permits or suppresses them. This analysis seeks to demonstrate the pervasive nature of totalitarian control across different realms of life and the way a taboo is used to achieve this control. It also emphasises the dehumanising effects of these prohibitions on individuals living in these societies. Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá, jak tabu pomáhá udržet totalitní moc v románech Konec civilizace aneb Překrásný nový svět od Aldouse Huxleyho a Devatenáct set osmdesát čtyři od George Orwella. Práce představuje různé mechanismy, které pomáhají dosažení a udržení totální moci státu tím, že identifikuje činnosti, věci a ideje, jež jsou v každodenním životě postav tabu. Jelikož se tabu často nacházejí na pomezí instinktů a společenských zvyklostí, zabývá se tato práce napětím mezi přirozenými lidskými sklony a mírou, do jaké jim společnost umožňuje volný průběh, nebo je naopak potlačuje. Cílem této práce je ukázat všudypřítomnost totalitní moci napříč různými oblastmi života a způsob, jakým je tabu využíváno k dosažení naprosté kontroly. Zároveň je zdůrazněno, že tyto přísné zákazy vedou k odlidštění jedinců žijících v těchto společnostech.
