In this study, we present the quantitative abundance of expressed genes related to extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production under two different hydrological conditions in degraded permafrost soils, and in non-degraded permafrost soils. To better understand EPS production, we examined EPS-related genes in the genomes of two EPS-producing bacterial isolates, Curtobacterium oceanosedimentum and Viridibacilus arvi, both isolated from degraded permafrost soils. Furthermore, we consider the variation in the expression of EPS-related genes across permafrost soils and their potential role in promoting soil aggregation and carbon stabilization.
