Abstract: The daily carbon balance of a plant indicates the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) taken up by the plant during photosynthesis and the amount released during respiration. Under biotic stress, this balance changes due to the activation of plant immunity. Constantly activated immunity negatively affect plant growth. It is possible that this is due to changes in photosynthetic yield; stomatal closure and accelerated respiration following activation of immunity. In this study, we investigate the effect of induction of plant immunity by microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs), microbial molecules recognized by plant receptors, on the selected parameters influencing daily carbon balance. We focus on measurements of CO2 assimilation, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and chlorophyll fluorescence after treatment with different MAMPs in model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and non-model crop plant Papaver somniferum.
