Abstract: Recent studies suggest that red blood cells (RBCs) in vertebrates may play an active role in the immune system beyond their traditional function as oxygen transporters. This thesis examines how RBCs in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) respond immunologically to the infection with Aeromonas hydrophila, a pathogen in aquatic environments. Using both in vitro and in vivo methods, the study assesses RBC cytokine production, reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity and protein expression, contributing to our understanding of RBCs as dynamic players in fish immunity.
