Exploring the Use of Humour in Teaching Advanced English to Czech Secondary School Students

This thesis examines the potential of humour as a pedagogical tool in teaching English as a foreign language to Czech secondary school students. It first defines humour and outlines the types relevant to language learning, exploring the phenomenon from linguistic, pragmatic, and sociocultural perspectives. Attention is given to the competencies non-native speakers need in order to interpret humour successfully, as well as to the challenges teachers may encounter when using humorous materials. Building on this theoretical foundation, the thesis investigates the role of humour in the English as a foreign language classroom, its effects on learners, and its possible applications to the teaching process. Practical example activities illustrate how humour can support the development of key communicative modesreception, production, interaction, and mediation. The final part presents a humour-based card game in which students engage with the challenges of linguistic ambiguity and apply their sociocultural knowledge to decode humour and various cultural references. In the application section, data obtained from the pilot implementation of the game in secondary school teaching are used to present the potential benefits of employing humour to develop students' communicative skills, to show which strategies learners use when interpreting and understanding humour in English.
