Vertikální střih větru je definován jako změna vektoru rychlosti větru ve vertikálním směru či jako podíl velikosti rozdílového vektoru a vzdálenosti výškových hladin. Vektor vertikálního střihu větru lze získat také graficky, kdy leží na tečně k hodografu ve zvoleném boděa jeho velikost je úměrná rozdílu větrů v sousedních výškových hladinách. Vertikální střih větru vzniká jak z hlediska synoptického, například během vývoje cyklony či během postupu atmosférických front, tak i z mezosynoptického, kdy k němu dochází vlivem tření v mezní vrstvě, v důsledku konvekce nebo v rámci místních cirkulačních systémů. Vertikálního střih větru má největší vliv na typ konvektivní bouře, neboť podporuje její organizaci a životnost. Jeho studiem tak lze lépe pochopit, proč některé bouře způsobují závažné škody, zatímco jiné zaniknou během krátké doby. Je-li vertikální střih větru slabý (do 10 m/s), dochází obvykle k vývoji jednoduchých cel. V případě, že je střední (10 až 20 m/s) vyvíjí se multicely. Silný střih větru (nad 20 m/s) je spojen s výskytem supercel a popřípadě i s tornády. Vertical wind shear is defined as the change in wind velocity vector in the vertical direction, or as the ratio of the magnitude of the difference vector to the distance between altitude levels. The vertical wind shear vector can also be determined graphically, as it lies on the tangent to a hodograph at a given point and its magnitude is proportional to the wind difference between adjacent height levels. Vertical wind shear can arise from both synoptic-scale processes, such as the development of cyclones or the passage of atmospheric fronts, and mesoscale processes, such as friction in the mesosphere, convection, or local circulation systems. Vertical wind shear has the greatest influence on storm type, as it supports both the organization and longevity of convective storms. Studying it allows for a better understanding of why some storms cause significant damage while others dissipate quickly. When vertical wind shear is weak (up to 10 m/s), single-cell storms typically develop. Moderate shear (10 to 20 m/s) leads to the formation of multicell storms, while strong shear (above 20 m/s) is associated with supercells and sometimes tornadoes.
