This thesis is organised into seven chapters that collectively explore how environmental gradients shape insect diversity, community composition, and functional traits across multiple tropical ecosystems. Chapters I to IV focus on African savannahs within Kruger National Park, South Africa. Chapter I disentangle the relative importance of climatic, habitat, and disturbance drivers of insect richness and community structure across large spatial scales. Chapter II investigates the effects of seasonal rainfall variation on the temporal dynamics of diversity and composition of moth and mantis communities. Chapter III examines how mopane tree dominance influences species richness and community composition of multiple taxonomic groups, including plants, insects, birds, mammals, and bats. Chapter IV documents new faunistic records of moth species in the region, addressing critical knowledge gaps in Afrotropical biodiversity. Chapters V and VI examine elevational biodiversity patterns in tropical forests on Mount Cameroon. Chapter V assesses patterns of diversity, community composition, and functional traits (body size and elevational range size), in microlepidopterans along the elevational gradient.
