The proposed study focuses on idai keishō, a genre of Japanese mathemati- cal texts from the 17th and 18th century. It combines historical, cultural and linguistic analysis to challenge the current view of this tradition which em- phasises its contribution to the qualitative development of traditional Japanese mathematics, but neglects other aspects of idai texts. I give multiple pieces of evidence that the true nature of idai tradition was a bit different: for many authors idai texts served as a tool of self-promotion, rather than a platform for communicating their mathematical discoveries. Kombinuje historickou, kulturní a lingvi- stickou analýzu s cílem zpochybnit současný pohled na tuto tradici. Dosavadní literatura zdůrazňuje přínos tradice idai k rozvoji tradiční japonské matematiky, ale opomíjí jiné aspekty těchto textů. Ve své práci argumentuji, že skutečná povaha této tradice byla poněkud odlišná, a že pro mnoho autorů tyto texty sloužily spíše jako nástroj sebeprezentace než jako platforma pro sdílení matem- atických objevů.
