C1 - Internal use Thesis Abstract This thesis examines Tony Kushner's Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes and many of its intertextual references through the lens of Midrash, a Jewish interpretive tradition. Focusing on Kushner's intricate use of allusions and paraphrases, the study analyzes how the play interacts with Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire, Victor Fleming's film adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, Carl G. Jung's The Red Book/Liber Novus, and the biblical Book of Jonah and Book of Genesis to explore themes of identity, sexuality, religion, and the struggle for social justice. Building upon Douglas W. Powers's argument that Angels in America is a Midrashic rewriting of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, this thesis argues that play functions as a modern form of Midrash for the LGBTQ+ community, offering a message of hope, resilience, and the potential for collective transformation in a world grappling with crisis. By analyzing the interplay of these diverse intertextual influences, the thesis demonstrates the flexibility of the Midrashic reading and reveals the rich mosaic of intertextuality that contributes to the play's enduring power and relevance. Zaměřuje se na Kushnerovo komplexní využití aluzí a parafrází a analyzuje, jak interaguje s Tennessee Williamsovou A Streetcar Named Desire, Flemingovou filmovou adaptací The Wizard of Oz, Jungovou The Red Book/Liber Novus a biblickými příběhy z Knihy Jonáš a Genesis k prozkoumání témat identity, sexuality, náboženství a boje za sociální spravedlnost. V návaznosti na rozvíjení argumentu Douglase W. Powerse o hře jako midrašickém přepisu Cat on a Hot Tin Roof tato práce tvrdí, že Angels in America funguje jako moderní forma midraše věnovaná LGBTQ+ komunitě a nabízí poselství naděje, nezdolnosti a potenciálu kolektivní transformace ve světě potýkajícím se s krizí. Analýzou vzájemného působení těchto rozmanitých intertextuálních vlivů práce demonstruje flexibilitu midrašického čtení a odhaluje bohatou mozaiku intertextuality, která přispívá k trvalé síle a relevanci hry.
