KAREL ŠVEC - dissertation thesis abstract Factors shaping microbial communities associated with ecologically important bark beetles Abstract Microbial symbionts of bark beetles, including both bacteria and fungi, play a crucial role in their ecology, development, and survival within the extremely nutrient-poor and hostile environment of host tree phloem. This dissertation focuses on identifying the factors that shape the composition and function of microbial communities associated with three ecologically important European bark beetles-particularly the spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) and two species of the genus Hylesinus. By integrating cultivation-based methods, amplicon sequencing, genomics, metatranscriptomics, and microscopy, the study tested the following three hypotheses: (i) that I. typographus gut microbiome composition is structured by the beetle's developmental stage and season; (ii) that its microbial symbionts exhibit metabolicspecialization and complementarity in supporting host nutrition; and (iii) that the microbiome is either stably transmitted across generations or reacquired from the environment.
