This thesis explores the role of myth in the pedagogical system of the Roman Stoic philosopher Epictetus. While detailed accounts have been given of Epictetus9 pedagogy, or paideia, scholarship has discussed his treatment of myth rather indirectly. Thus, the following thesis offers a review of the existing literature on Epictetus9 paideia and the Stoics9 general attitudes toward myth, followed by detailed analyses of Epictetus9 references to myth in his Discourses. It is demonstrated that Epictetus interprets characters and episodes from the Homeric poems and Attic tragedy based on principles of Stoic moral psychology. He generally does not offer non-literal interpretations but often engages with stories in a dramatic fashion, performing role-playing exercises with his students. These interpretations and excercises always serve the function of assisting his students to apply principles of moral psychology to themselves. Tato práce zkoumá roli mýtu v pedagogickém systému Yímského stoického filozofa Epiktéta. A koli byly podány podrobné popisy Epiktétovy pedagogiky, neboli paideie, odborná literatura se jeho pYístupem k mýtu zabývala spíae nepYímo. Následující práce proto nabízí pYehled existující literatury o Epiktétov paideii a obecném pYístupu stoiko k mýtom, poté následuje podrobná analýza Epiktétových odkazo na mýty v jeho Rozpravách. Epiktétos, jak se sna íme ukázat, interpretuje postavy a epizody z homérských básní a attických tragédií na základ principo stoické morální psychologie. PYitom nenabízí doslovné interpretace, ale asto se zabývá pYíbhy dramatickým zposobem a provádí se svými studenty cvi ení v hraní rolí. Tyto interpretace a cvi ení v dy slou í k tomu, aby pomohly jeho studentom aplikovat principy morální psychologie na sebe samé.
