Velké jižní poloostrovy Evropy - Pyrenejský, Apeninský a Balkánský - jsou významnými centry výskytu plazů a obojživelníků. Jejich blízkost k Africe, daná geologickým vývojem, umožnila v minulosti migrace suchozemských plazů a obojživelníků, stejně jako mnoha jiných druhů. Klíčovým obdobím pak byla Messinská salinitní krize, kdy vyschnuté Středozemní moře umožnilo snazší přechody, které po jeho opětovném naplnění vedly k izolaci populací a oddělenému vývoji. V době ledové sloužily poloostrovy jako glaciální refugia - oblasti, kam se stahovaly druhy citlivé na změny teplot a odkud mohly po oteplení znovu osidlovat své původní areály. Migrace však omezovaly přírodní bariéry - hlavně Pyreneje a Alpy. Balkánský poloostrov nemá tyto výrazné bariéry, proto se z něj do ostatních částí Evropy rozšířilo nejvíce druhů. Díky všem těmto aspektům mají jižní poloostrovy vyšší druhovou rozmanitost herpetofauny, než zbytek Evropy. Nejvíce druhů se vyskytuje na Balkánském poloostrově, což souvisí s jeho dlouhodobou kontaktní zónou s Malou Asií, což z něj dělá důležitou migrační křižovatku. Naopak nejvíce endemitů se nachází na Pyrenejském poloostrově díky jeho relativně vysoké izolaci, ale i Apeninský poloostrov má vysoký poměr hlavně endemických obojživelníků. Výzkum a ochrana herpetofauny v těchto regionech je... The major southern peninsulas of Europe - the Iberian, Apennine, and Balkan - are key centers of reptile and amphibian diversity. Their geological history and proximity to Africa allowed past migrations of terrestrial species. A crucial period was the Messinian Salinity Crisis, when the Mediterranean partly dried up and allowed crossings of populations that later became isolated as sea levels rose again, leading to separate evolutionary paths. During the ice age, the peninsulas served as glacial refugia - areas where temperature-sensitive species retreated and from which they could recolonize their original distribution areas after warming. However, natural barriers like the Pyrenees and the Alps limited such migrations. The Balkan Peninsula lacks these strong barriers, enabling broader species dispersal to other parts of Europe. As a result, the southern peninsulas show greater herpetofaunal diversity than the rest of Europe. The Balkan peninsula hosts the highest number of species due to their long-term contact zone with Asia Minor, acting as a vital migration crossroad. On the other hand, the Iberian Peninsula holds the most endemic species, likely due to its relative isolation. The Apennine Peninsula also hosts a high proportion of endemic amphibians.
