Multicellular organisms utilize complex immune defenses, integrating both humoral and cellular mechanisms to maintain immunity and fight pathogens. Invertebrates rely on innate immunity with fixed responses, while vertebrates have adaptive immunity, which allows for quicker responses to previously encountered pathogens. Historically, innate immunity and adaptive immunity were viewed as separate domains, with memory associated solely with vertebrates; however, recent studies reveal that innate immunity can also exhibit memory-like traits, challenging the established distinctions. Immunological memory systems in basal vertebrates differ significantly from those in mammals, as they rely primarily on innate immune mechanisms and primitive adaptive responses, while specialized B cell-based adaptive systems represent an innovation which evolved into the highly specialised and long-lasting adaptive immunity of mammals. This thesis explores immune mechanisms of basal vertebrates against bacterial and parasitic infections, emphasizing the poorly explored role of nucleated erythrocytes in innate immunity and the contribution of B cells to lasting immunological memory, in teleost fishes. This research underscores the interconnectedness of various immune components and the universal nature of immunological memory across vertebrates.
