This diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of identity in dystopian literature, with particular attention to the novels The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments by Margaret Atwood. The main aim of the thesis is to examine how female identities are shaped, suppressed, and transformed within the context of a totalitarian regime. The thesis also outlines the theoretical background of the dystopian genre, compares classic and contemporary dystopian fiction, and describes its development within young adult literature. The core of the thesis is a literary analysis of Atwood's novels, with a detailed examination of the Gilead, its social hierarchy, and the roles of women in this system. Special focus is placed on four main narrators whose identities represent different forms of survival and resistance. The final part of the thesis discusses the increasing relevance of these works considering current political and social situation. Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou identity v dystopické literatuře, se zaměřením na romány Příběh služebnice a Svědectví od Margaret Atwoodové. Hlavním cílem práce je ukázat, jak jsou ženské identity utvářeny, narušovány a proměňovány v prostředí totalitního režimu. Práce dále představuje teoretický rámec dystopického žánru, srovnává klasickou a současnou dystopii a popisuje vývoj žánru v rámci literatury pro mladé dospělé. Centrem práce je literární analýza Atwoodové románů, ve které je podrobně rozebrán Gileád, společenská hierarchie a role žen v tomto systému. Zvláštní důraz je kladen na čtyři hlavní vypravěčky, jejichž identity odrážejí různé způsoby přežití a odporu. V závěru práce je věnována pozornost aktuálnosti těchto děl a jejich podobnosti s reálnými společenskými a politickými událostmi.
