The blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni is one of the major species causing the severe neglected tropical disease known as schistosomiasis. Adult worms reside in the human circulatory system, where they reproduce and lay large quantities of eggs. These either pass through the intestinal wall and are excreted from the host or become trapped in tissues, primarily in the liver, where they induce inflammation and fibrosis. The eggs are remarkable in their ability to modulate the host environment. They can regulate immune response, stimulate angiogenesis, bind blood components, and alter the host microbiome. Despite their importance in schistosomiasis pathogenesis, only few molecules responsible for the egg-host interaction have been identified and functionally characterised. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether eggs from different tissues differ in any significant way, as the vast majority of experiments have been performed on liver-isolated eggs, with intestinal eggs largely neglected. For these reasons, our research focused on identifying novel molecules potentially involved in egg-host interaction and on determining the differences between liver and intestinal eggs.
