Abstract: Heterotrophic Nanoflagellates (HNF) are key members of the freshwater food web, but many remain poorly characterized. In this thesis, we combined culture-dependent and culture-independent techniques such as Catalyzed Reporter Deposition-Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (CARD-FISH) and genome-resolved metagenomics to investigate the abundance, the biogeography, and the genomic diversity of these protists across freshwater lakes.
