This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the classification of sleep stages based on heart rate variability (HRV). Its main objective was to design various approaches for sleep classifi cation and implement them in a suitable environment. Three machine learning methods were used — Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and Support Vector Machine; each twice– for classification into three classes, which combined together the subphases of the nonREM phase into one, and into five classes (i.e., each phase separately). The resulting accuracy values are how many 30s segments of the HRV record were correctly classified out of the total number in %. It was found and confirmed that the individ ual nonREM subphases are harder to distinguish from one another, and therefore their classification is worse than when they are grouped into a single stage.
