The aim of this work is to demonstrate the capabilities of a simple self-driving vehicle using LiDAR technology for orientation in space. A Raspberry Pi computing platform is used to process the data, evaluate the situation and control the vehicle model. The control algorithms, implemented in Python, were designed specifically for the purpose of this work. The first algorithm allows driving along a bounded route (e.g. a tunnel) and avoiding obstacles that the vehicle may encounter along the way. The second algorithm locates an open passage in a wall and then guides the vehicle through it. The functionality was verified through repeated testing of the proposed scenarios for both algorithms. The success rate of the first algorithm was 72 %, with the most common problem being a late reaction to sharp turns, which led to unnecessary stopping of the vehicle. Tests of the second algorithm showed that LiDAR is not ideal for detecting and navigating in more open spaces without the use of more advanced methods such as artificial intelligence. However, despite significant limitations, a success rate of 58 % was achieved here.
