Titanové slitiny vykazovaly lepší smáčivost a schopnost udržet mazivo v kontaktu, což vedlo k silnější mazací vrstvě než u slitin CoCrMo.
Surface treatments of biomaterials, such as DLC coatings and microtexturing, can significantly extend the lifespan of joint replacements by enhancing their tribological properties. Mechanical wear of friction surfaces is a leading cause of implant failure, which makes the combination of appropriate materials and surface treatments essential for ensuring reliability and long-term performance. The aim of this study was to experimentally assess the effects of DLC coatings, microtextures, and their combination on friction, lubrication, and wear processes in CoCrMo and Ti6Al4V biomaterials. Reciprocal friction tests in pin-on-plate configuration and surface topography analysis were performed. The evolution of lubricating film thickness was also monitored for selected pairs using fluorescence microscopy and wear in long-term tests. The results suggest that DLC coatings reduce wear but may increase the friction coefficient, particularly when in contact with UHMWPE. Microtextures led to increased friction, likely due to higher surface roughness caused by the manufacturing process. The best results were obtained through the combination of coating and texturing, which resulted in reduced wear and the formation of a stable lubricating film. Titanium alloys demonstrated better wettability and a greater ability to retain lubricant in contact, leading to a thicker lubrication film compared to CoCrMo alloys. Texture orientation also had a significant impact, with horizontal grooves showing the lowest friction. The findings of this study confirm that the combination of surface treatments, particularly with Ti6Al4V, can significantly improve the reliability and longevity of joint replacements, making this biomaterial a promising candidate for further research and broader application in implantology.
