In this diploma thesis, the effect of carboxylate-based inhibitors on the corrosion behavior of the AZ31 magnesium alloy was investigated, as well as their influence on the retention of its mechanical properties. The selected carboxylates were tartaric acid and oxalic acid, applied in concentrations ranging from 5 to 50 mmoldm. The samples were subjected to immersion tests lasting from 1 to 7 days, after which the corroded surfaces were examined using light and electron microscopy. Additional analytical methods included potentiodynamic polarization tests, FTIR and EDS spectroscopic analyses, and tensile strength measurements. It was found that, despite the corrosion protection provided by these inhibitors, no significant improvement in mechanical properties was observed compared to NaCl solution. In fact, oxalic acid resulted in a 3% reduction in mechanical strength compared to NaCl. Tartaric acid showed a slight improvement of 1.2%; however, given the standard deviations, it cannot be conclusively stated that this effect is repeatable. Overall, these inhibitors proved to be effective in reducing the corrosion rate of AZ31; however, they did not improve its mechanical properties.
