4 Abstract This dissertation explores the relationship between Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) and Wittgenstein's philosophy of language, particularly his concept of language games. The dissertation proposes that therapy is not merely a problem-solving exercise but a rule-governed linguistic practice. Wittgenstein's later philosophy challenges the representational view of language-this work argues that therapeutic dialogue is not a neutral tool for describing reality but an active medium. This medium constructs meaning in social interaction. The dissertation examines how therapeutic dialogue, e.g. SFBT, reflects this dynamic co-construction of meaning. This thesis critiques traditional problem-focused therapies-psychoanalysis and cognitive behavioural therapy-and argues that the conception of problems in therapy resides on flawed assumptions about language and meaning. Instead of analysing problems as external entities, it views problems as social constructs originating in language games. This transition from representationalism leads to a new understanding of therapeutic success-the client's ability to engage with social norms and construct meaningful solutions defines it rather than problem diagnosis.
