cze Abstract:
The first part contains research dealing with the description of individual zebras and their breeding in Zoos. The second part of the research is focused on observing the daily routine of the herd of Grant zebras kept in a combined enclosure (called "Pěší safari") in the Safari Park Dvůr Králové nad Labem. The herd consists of four adult females with three weaned foals, two more than one-year-old foals and a male. During observation the daily routine, social interactions were monitored. During the observation, one of the four zebras gave birth to a little mare. This little mare was not included in the ethogram because of the possibility of a skewed result. The method of synchronous observation of all ten herd members in a specified interval of 12 minutes was used as part of the monitoring. Four basic activities were observed and evaluated: movement, standing, lying down and receiving food, water or sucking milk by foals. The contacts between the individual zebras were recorded in the Sociogram, during this observation. Aggressive behaviour was deducted from all contacts. The results recorded during the observation show that the zebras spent almost half of their time eating. They spent 25 % standing and their movement was 23 %. They spent less than 5 % lying down. Adult zebras lay for a minimal time. Little foals lay most of the time in the herd. The adult stallion Memphis behaved the most aggressively. He mainly attacked and chased away two more than one-year-old foals. Memphis’s aggression accounted for 35% of the aggressive behaviour of the entire herd. It was noted that most social contact is between the mare and its foal during the observation. The female's contacts with the cub were three to four times more frequent than contact with another member of the herd. The foals, on the other hand, had the same numerous contacts with both the mother and the equally old foal. The obtained data could help in the ongoing breeding of zebras. It could also contribute to the understanding of the social functioning of the herd. This could help to improve the best possible compilation of herd.
