Minority status of Kurds in Turkey

This bachelor thesis examines the minority status of Kurds in Turkey, which is a diverse country in terms of ethnic and religious groups. While doing that, the thesis emphasizes the legal and constitutional status of the minorities, in particular Kurds. In other words, the research focuses on the non-existing status and rights of the minorities in Turkey due to legislative obstacles. In this regard, the author examines the Kurdish question in Turkey which has appeared first after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey and became one of the major issues in the Middle East. Therefore, the thesis focuses on various legal policies toward Kurds and minorities during both the first years of the republic and 1980s which was a period of the military junta in Turkey. These policies have also been the main obstacle to the solution of the Kurdish question in Turkey due to the contrast between the demands of the Kurdish movement and legal acts. Consequently, the thesis emphasizes the emergence of different Kurdish political organizations which have risen as a result of the assimilation policies of Turkey towards minorities.
