Napomáhá regulací četnosti kopytníků, selekčním lovem zlepšuje genofond kopytníků, pojídá mršiny a tím zabraňuje vzniku chorob, predací jiných šelem zvyšuje biodiverzitu prostředí a prokazatelně mění tvar krajiny. The Eurasian wolf (Canis lupus) occupies a position at the top of the food chain and its role in the ecosystem can never be fully replaced by humans. It has a demonstrably positive effect on the species below its own trophic level. It helps to regulate the population of ungulates, improves the ungulate gene pool by selective predation, consumes carrion and thus prevents the emergence of diseases, increases the biodiversity of the environment by predation of other carnivores and has a distinct impact on the shape of the landscape. On the other hand, the Eurasian wolf is the most prolific predator of livestock and wildlife among the extant carnivorans in the Levoča Mountains . The density of the wolf population in the Levoča Mountains was estimated at 4 individuals per 100 km2, the most frequent sightings were of reclusive individuals or couples, observations of larger packs were absent, however its known that they appear sporadically in the studied area. The average level of natural growth was marked 1.45 woody plants / m2. The dominant species of the in the observed transects were Picea abies with the proportional share of 66.5%, followed by Fagus sylvatica at13.4%, Larix decidua at 10.5% and Bettula pendulina at 5.4%. Overall, 20% of the Picea abies specimen were affected by herbivore-biting, compared to 34% of Fagus sylvatica, 13% of Larix decidua and 23% of Bettula penduline. In a specific area subjected to the observation of herbivore bark-peeling, the damage has been inflicted on 15% of Picea abies, 7% of Fagus sylvatica and 6% of Larix decidua specimen (including damage caused by antlers). This observation provides the base for the predicted impact of Eurasian wolf on forest ecosystems and its particular significance through the influence on the population of ungulates and their wider ethology.
