Priony jsou proteinové infekční částice prosté nukleové kyseliny, původci fatálních transmisivních spongiformních encefalopatií. Práce obsahuje charakteristiku infekčního agens, popis lidských i zvířecích prionových chorob, historický vývoj prionové hypotézy a literární analýzu dat týkajících se nejen prionové teorie, ale i teorií alternativních. Zároveň poukazuje na problematiku možného zapojení kofaktorů do procesu prionové replikace. Prions are protein infectious particles in absence of nucleic acid, responsible for the fatal transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. This bachelor's thesis includes the characteristic of the infectious agent, the description of human and animal prion diseases, a historical development of the protein-only hypothesis and literary analysis of data about both protein-only theory and alternative hypotheses. Equally, this work points out the issue of the potential participation of cofactors in the process of the prion replication.
