The influence of ecological conditions, management and stand botanical composition on growth of slender speedwell (Veronica filiformis Smith) in grasslands

Slender speedwell (Veronica filiformis) is a non-native and invasive species of grassland. The aim of the study was to test the ability of the Slender speedwell growth in differently managed grasslands (mowing, mulching, grazing). After a two-year experiment, a statistically significant influence on the management application among growth of Slender speedwell was found (F = 14.462, p <0.001). The best survival was found in one-year mulched vegetation (dominant Deschampsia caespitosa) in the Zhůří plot and in hay and pasture crops in the V. Chuchelec plot (dominant Festuca pratensis, Lolium perenne, Trisetum flavescens, Poa pratensis, Dactylis glomerata and Phleum pratense). Slender speedwell can be well applied in permanent grasslands higher, colder and wetter conditions with management as mowing, grazing or mulching.
Treeline shift under global change - ectomycorrhizas as a limiting factor?

It is assumed that global change will cause a treeline shift . Because competitive abilities and natural regeneration of trees are infl uenced by ectomycorrhizal (ECM) symbiosis and fi ne roots and ECM mycelia play a key role in belowground carbon turnover, we have studied the ECM associations of treeline ecosystems. We aim to fi nd out how resistant and resilient current ECM associations of these ecosystems are and whether the absence of appropriate ECM symbionts could be a limiting factor of an ecosystem shift . We have focused on natural mountain spruce forests and spruce forests on the treeline; dwarf pine stands with scattered spruce trees above the treeline will be studied in years to come. Ectomycorrhizas were described by morphological features and sequenced to identify fungal species. In the case of taxonomically complicated ECM fungal groups, sequences from microscopically identifi ed sporocarps were used for the identifi cation of ectomycorrhizas. A disproportion between ECM fungi diversity in spruce stands and dwarf pine stands revealed based on a literature review can indicate diff erent ectomycorrhiza patterns at the treeline. According to preliminary results from the Giant Mts. there is an adequate ECM fungal species diversity in mountain spruce forest and spruce forests on the treeline.

Tradičně volné a otevřené prostranství v okolí rotundy Sv. Jiří na Řípu je spolu s průhledy a výhledy do krajiny zanesené náletovými porosty. Ty zabraňují tradičním výhledům z Řípu do krajiny a naopak z krajiny na rotundu. Lokalita byla zahrnuta do evropského systému Natura 2000. Obnovy pohledových vazeb by bylo dosaženo obnovou stepní vegetace na místech k tomu vhodných a nízkou křovinnou a bylinnou vegetací tam, kde to současné synantropní podmínky neumožují.
Stonožky smrkových lesů Moravskoslezských Beskyd, Česká republika

Centipede communities (Chilopoda) were studied in five spruce forests (.i.Picea abies./i.) in the Moravskoslezské Beskydy Mts., Northern Moravia, Czech Republic. Investigations were carried out from 1988 to 1993 and afterwards repeatedly in the years 1996-1997 in 5 to 134 year-old forest stands situated at the localities Bílý Kříž and Kněhyně. The stands differed in altitude, in air pollution and degree of tree defoliation. A total of 15 species of centipedes was found in all stands studied. The most abundant species occurring in all studied stands were .i.Lithobius mutabilis, L. forficatus, L. burzenlandicus burzenlandicus, Geophilus insculptus./i.. The centipedes .i.L. burzenlandicus burzenlandicus, G. insculptus./i. predominated mainly in the soil samples, .i.L. forficatus./i. was abundant in pitfall traps only. The mean densities of the whole centipede communities ranged from 9.0 to 194.6 ind.m-2 in 1988-1993, the highest densities were characteristic for the youngest spruce stand.
New way of damage of the young trees stands by red deer (Cervus elaphus)

Young rowans (Sorbus aucuparia) were intensively damaged by stem breaking in mountain spruce stands in Kněhyně NR, Beskydy Mts. (CZ). Breakage was done by red deer during the summer and is clearly intended to permit access to the leaves on the treetops.
