This bachelor thesis is concerned with examination, analysis and comparison of existing Czech translations of novels from contemporary British author, Bernard Cornwell, it searches for wrong, debatable and exemplary solutions of translation issues and suggests its own solutions. The thesis also involves author's own translation of the novel Redcoat.
Relative adjectives in a contrastive perspective.

My diploma thesis deal with relative adjectives and their translation. The aim of this thesis is to map out frequently used adjectives and their equivalents in Spanish. The thesis is divided into two parts: a theoretical part and a practical part. In the theoretical part, the author discusses adjectives from the perspective of Czech and Spanish grammar. In the practical part, ananalysis of specific adjectives, chosen by the author herself, is carried out. In the conclusion, findings are evaluated and the thesis is concluded on the basis of corpus analysis. The thesis is written in Czech language.\\
The use of translation during foreign language lessons (with focus on Spanish)

The topic of the thesis is the use of translation exercises in foreign language lessons (namely Spanish). The first part of the thesis deals with the development of foreign language teaching, the status of mother tongue (and translation) in foreign language teaching, positive cross-linguistic transfer and interference. Further, individual methods of foreign language teaching are analyzed. It is stated whether or not the translation exercises are used for each of the methods. In the second part, we find the definition and categorization of the translation and examples of the translation exercises. The last part is focused on stylistics (narrative techniques, writing genres and functional styles). The specifics of translation are listed and the translation exercises are suggested for each functional style.

First part of the bachelor thesis consists of a translation from French into Czech of a large part of the essay "La Personne et le sacré" of the French author Simone Weil, that was published by Éditions Gallimard publishing house in 1957 as a part of the collection of essays and letters Écrits de Londres et dernières lettres. The second part of the thesis offers a commentary of the translation that begins by a source text analysis, then continues with a chapter on the translation concept, the translation problems and their solutions. Following are typologies of translation procedures and translation shifts.
Virginia Woolf's "To the Lighthouse" in Czech translations

The aim of this bachelor's work is to compare the two czech translations of an english book by Virginia Woolf called "To the lighthouse". It examines closely each of the following levels: lexical, morphological, syntactical and semantic level of language. The work observes mostly the differences in dissimilarity and similarity of the translations in relation to the original english text, as well as the archaicity and expresiveness of expressions when comparing the two translations in relation to each other only.
Czech-English cross-language mediation in EFL teaching and learning

The aim of this thesis is to introduce the concept of cross-language mediation, which is well established in some countries abroad but is not widely used in the Czech environment, from various points of view. The work tries to show that cross-language mediation is an engaging, effective and interesting activity preparing the learners for real-life mediating situations employing both mother tongue and English. The work is enriching for its battery of mediation activities designed for the Czech context, mediation assessment criteria and a survey among Czech and foreign teachers summarizing their attitude towards mediation and its role in EFL lessons. The use of translation from a foreign language text for the development of textual competencies in mother tongue

The topic of this thesis is the use of translation from a foreign language as a tool to improve textual competence in the mother tongue. The first part deals with the evolution of foreign language teaching, the status of mother tongue in foreign language teaching, positive cross-linguistic transfer and interference. Further, the concept of the method is defined and different methods of foreign language teaching are described. It's specified whether the mother tongue and translation exercises are or are not used while using each of the listed teaching methods. The second part defines translation and categorizes types of translation and contains various types types of translation exercises. The last part is focused on stylistics (narrative techniques, writing genres and functional styles). A sample of translation from Czech into Spanish and vice versa is supplied for a majority of the functional styles.
