Language policy as an instrument of nation-building: The case of Post-Maidan Ukraine
Viktora, Matyáš ; Záhora, Jakub (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Martin (referee)
In this thesis, the issue of language policies and nation-building as seen by a constructivist perspective are studied, the studied case being the Post-Maidan Ukraine. It is argued that the ruling elites of Ukrainian society are persuading the members of minority-language populations to re-categorize themselves according to the blueprint of national and linguistic identities that the elites are presenting. The thesis studies the responsiveness of the populations of Kyiv, Dnipro, Uzhhorod and Odesa to the identity-building efforts. To assess the success rates of the endeavour, the method of linguistic landscape analysis and a survey among students of Czech in Ukraine are employed. In the linguistic landscape analysis, the behaviours of issuers of official, commercial and informal messages appearing in the studied cities are observed. Looking at the language composition of these signs, the overall responsiveness of the populations towards the official language policies, and, by extension, towards the nation-building efforts overall, are assumed. The survey then provides supporting evidence by asking the respondents questions about their attitudes towards the language legislation and stance on the issue of language use in the country. It is observed that in informal contexts, the messages often revert...

Haakenstad Koháková, Magdalena ; Halbich, Marek (advisor) ; Opatrný, Josef (referee) ; Mácha, Přemysl (referee)
Visual Reinterpretation of National Identity in the Public Space of Mexico Visual communication in public spaces of Mexico has been significantly shaping collective identity, from pre-Columbian times to nowadays. This PhD thesis analyzes the visual aspect of cultural and religious identity in pre-Columbian and colonial eras, later, the discussion is led through the development of the modern day national identity that followed while concurrently explaining how former structural characteristics were partially maintained. Those phenomena are explored from two vantage points: that of the cultural and political elites and that of the general population. However, these perspectives aren't presented in a sharp opposition, rather, as two conjugating cultural streams that have been continuously negotiating and shaping cultural and national identity in correlation with historical and cultural events, including influence from significant others. Accordingly, the thesis explores the official version of national identity, that is promoted by state power, but also how official identity is received into intimate spaces, the everydayness of the bearers of such identity, its reinterpretation and alternatively, the rejections. Since public art (mural art, popular graphics, graffiti, stencil art and other diverse means of...
Segregated Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Baklová, Eliška ; Chrzová, Barbora (advisor) ; Klípa, Ondřej (referee)
The thesis focuses on segregated education in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which occurs at all levels of schools. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a multinational state inhabited by three constitutive nations: Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats. After the war, which ended in 1995, the Dayton Peace Agreement was signed. This agreement has divided Bosnia and Herzegovina into two entities: The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, inhabited mainly by Bosniaks and Croats and The Republic of Srpska, inhabited mainly by Serbs, and the Brčko District, which is governed by entities. Each of these nations perceives their national identity, history and the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina differently. Education plays a major role in shaping national identity because it gives pupils the values of the society in which they live. The thesis focuses on the influence of conflict on education, on the creation of national identity and describes the educational system of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The subject of the research are textbooks and curricula which are different for each of the constitutive nations and which reflect their diverse attitudes to the common history and state system. The thesis deals with their development in years 1995-2019 and observes how their nationally tuned content has changed.

Koptišová, Evelína ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
Gastronomy belongs among the important elements of the French national identity and at the same time it is one of the main tourist attractions. Which place and why does the gastronomy have among the modern trends of public diplomacy and how is the French gastro-diplomacy formed on the online social media? There are certain long-lasting tensions visible in the French gastronomic discourse, for example between the Republican idea of unity and the foreign policy strategy of supporting diversity. However, historical research shows that these aspects are not excluding one another, they are more like two sides of the same coin. Gastro-diplomacy is then understood as a narrow dimension of the foreign policy, namely as a part of public cultural diplomacy. In the framework of contemporary French gastro-diplomacy, it is possible to observe the employment of modern instruments, such as the communication through online social networks. Combined with the bet on the long-standing good image of French cuisine, it is one of the ways in which France prove successful in the international arena. It is also a sign of strategic behaviour against the standardization of food products. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts showed that during the period 1. 1. 2009 - 30. 6. 2017,...

Moravec, Vít ; Macková, Veronika (advisor) ; Trunečka, Ondřej (referee)
The thesis examines whether Czech and Slovak printed national daily newspapers reveal expressions of patriotism and fanfare in ice-hockey news reports. Sports matches between two nations, which once formed one state, have all the requisites for being more special and prestigious than regular matchups. For this reason, these two events have been selected as suitable for analysis: the final match in the 2000 World Championship between the Czech Republic and Slovakia (5:3) and the 2012 semifinal between the same opponents (1:3). The theoretical part introduces concepts of nation, nationalism, national identity, national symbols, myths, stereotypisation and fanfare. In the empirical part, a discourse analysis is performed for their examination and application on a research sample, which consists of texts from the time of the given matches between the Czech and Slovak national teams. As an assistant method, a quantitative content analysis has been chosen to provide answers to questions concerning the number and location of articles in each country's newspapers. The results of the analysis proved that Czech and Slovak printed daily newspapers frequently reveal expressions of patriotism and fanfare in the period under review, distinctively using the first person of the plural "we" or a tendency...
