Derzyan, Tatev ; Young, Mitchell (advisor) ; Stępka, Maciej (referee)
Tatev Derzyan (41794665) The Effectiveness of Erasmus+ and UGRAD Soft Power on Armenia during Hard Times (Nagorno-Karabakh War 2020) Abstract The thesis focuses on soft power and public diplomacy through exchange study programs of the European Union and the United States. Precisely, the thesis studies the influence of the educational exchange programs (Erasmus+ and UGRAD) on the Armenian exchange students in the scope of soft power. After establishing the influence of the exchange programs on the formation of the perceptions about the host countries, the thesis further focuses on the sustainability of the perception taking into consideration the Nagorno-Karabakh Second war which is a 'critical juncture' as it was a dramatic event in the life of the Armenian youth and could have influenced their views of the EU and the US. It is important to note that the academic literature on the exchange students' perceptions does not provide any studies through the lenses of the political events in the participants' home country. Thirty-nine semi-structured interviews have been conducted among the Erasmus+ and UGRAD participants from Armenia alongside the content analysis of the documents that the EU and the US released during the Nagorno-Karabakh Second war in order to understand what was the politics of the host...
The Role of the Judiciary in the Integration Process of the United States of America and the European Union
Zelený, Jan ; Kindlová, Miluše (referee)
The Role of the Judiciary in the Integration Process of the United States of America and the European Union The aim of this thesis is to describe the integration process of both the European Union and the United States of America and to depict the most crucial role the judiciary had. The thesis will explain how courts can in general substitute the other branches of power, usually when the latter are inactive or even unwilling to act. Both ways how the European Court of Justice (working together with national courts) and the Supreme Court of the United States have influenced or even enabled successful union-making policy will be compared. One of the most surprising facts might be that the Supreme Court had rather an auxiliary role in turning the Union into a strong entity, while the Court of Justice most likely was a real European integration leader. The thesis presents number of specific examples or cases how both courts not only created legal rules but also came up with policy-making decisions, which has significantly changed the given community and lives of all citizens in it. It can be concluded that from nowadays perspective, both courts enjoy great power and prestige. Obviously, the SCOTUS is being regarded as the stronger one from those two. However, such a view might not be entirely accurate...

The Science in Intended Curriculum and Framework Documents in Selected Countries
Holec, Jakub ; Dvořák, Dominik (advisor) ; Knecht, Petr (referee) ; Žák, Vojtěch (referee)
The main aim of this study is to enrich the discourse on developing an intended form of the science curriculum in different country contexts. A multi-case study research design uses methods of content and comparative analysis to find answers to the research questions. The empirical part of the thesis consists of single case studies of England, Finland, Scotland and the United States of America containing contexts of the current curriculum development, description and interpretation of analysed structural and content phenomena in the curriculum of primary (ISCED 1) and secondary education (ISCED 2). Based on the single case studies of curricula, a comparative multi-case study is conducted, which focuses on the identification and interpretation of common and different features in the structure and content of the curricula to be compared. The studied documents can be divided into competency- oriented and subject-oriented curricula, nevertheless, each curriculum contains elements of both approaches. The subject content of the contemporary curricula seems to be more elaborated or at least more detailed than in documents of the previous decade. It is possible that even in the field of curriculum development there is political influence of neoconservative forces or an intellectual influence of so-called...

Typology of North Korea's Behavior: Analysis of the relations between the US and DPRK
Štroblová, Radka ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
Since the accession of Donald J. Trump to the presidency, there have been many significant events that have affected the United States' relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea - from testing North Korean nuclear weapons, to verbal insults to both officials, to a historical meeting of the leaders of both Korean states in the demilitarized zone, a joint performance by South Korean and North Korean athletes at the Pyongyang Winter Olympics, to the historic Singapore Summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un. However, the second meeting of both representatives in Hanoi ended prematurely - without signing the planned joint statement. Relations between the United States of America and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea are constantly developing. The main theme of the talks in the past was the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula to ensure lasting peace and stability for the region. The North Korean nuclear program and efforts to reduce it have thus become a major issue in multilateral negotiations, with the Republic of Korea, China, Russia and Japan participating in addition to the United States and North Korea. North Korea, however, often sabotaged the talks and the period of cooperation was interrupted by provocations and hostile...
A Historical Reflection on Holocaust in the North American Society
Krausová, Adéla ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Calda, Miloš (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with an evolution of historical reflection on the Holocaust in the north american society. It analyses perception of the Holocaust by American society. There is a premise that Americans connect with Holocaust mainly on an emotional level - often without having deeper factual knowledge of it. Lessons of the Holocaust help them understand contemporary issues and they often use it to interpret historical traumas of their nation. It was concluded that even though Holocaust is often distorted in the mass media, its representation through mass media has positive aspects. The main one is that the most important message about importance of commemoration is transmitted.
Comparison of U.S. interference in Nicaragua in the 1980s and after the re-election of Daniel Ortega
Houšková, Petra ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with U.S. foreign policy towards regime in Nicaragua in 1980s and during the last eleven years - since when, specify, which means during the era of Daniel Ortega. For the United States he represents a very inconvenient person and it is using different methods, which have been developing over the years, they are trying to remove him from the leadership of the country. His assumption of leadership of the country provoked commotion in the Reagan administration. It started to work on his overthrow. These attempts led to an affair known as Iran-Contras, when it was revealed that American administration was illegally financially supporting and training rebels, who should have overthrown Ortega. The United Stated started to use more sophisticated methods in the 21st century; they are trying to fight against Ortega by using more diplomatic policy and by new law called the Nica Act. Even though they are not using illegal methods anymore, they have been criticized for interfering into the internal affairs of a sovereign state. My thesis is analysing and comparing the methods, which American administrations have been using in Nicaragua. The main questions the thesis answers are: which methods American foreign policy has been using to interfere into this central American country and...
Impact of NAFTA on Mexican agricultural sector
Moravcová, Markéta ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Fiřtová, Magdalena (referee)
The objective of this thesis is to evaluate impacts of North American Free Trade Agreement on Mexican agricultural sector. The treaty was a substantial liberalization element for Mexico. After coming to force, the agriculture of both partner countries was gradually liberalized and after fifteen years the trade between the partner countries was free of all trade barriers on agricultural commodities. The thesis analyses the problem from various aspects. The first aspect consists of subsidies which the Mexican government pays to its farmers and subsidies which the U.S. pays to its farmers. The U.S. subsidies are considerably higher than the Mexican ones. The second aspect comprises the impacts on agricultural commodities and its production in general. This part examines impacts of the agreement on production of particular agricultural commodities and the change of production of certain commodities is examined. The production of more remunerative commodities like fruits and vegetables replaces the production of staples like corn. The following aspect examines the employment and poverty on the countryside and its connection to the treaty. The last aspect lists the impacts of the new agricultural structure on the environment in Mexico. The thesis comes to conclusion that the agreement created more...
