Development Assistance in Post-conflict Reconstruction in Africa: Case Study of Rwanda and Burundi
Bártová, Jana ; Sejkora, Jiří (advisor) ; Havlová, Radka (referee)
The thesis deals with development cooperation in post-conflict reconstruction. The comparative case study analyzes the specific involvement of the international community in the post-war reconstruction of Rwanda and Burundi with emphasis on two main areas, political/constitutional, and socio-economic. Based on the findings of the analysis, possible measures are suggested to make development cooperation in post-conflict reconstruction more effective, especially in the case of Burundi. The results of the analysis show that the international community should in case of these two countries, among other things, mostly focus on securing political stability, supporting civil society, or building infrastructure, and thus help to achieve the goals of post-conflict reconstruction.
Bases of Developement Asistence in Zimbabwe
Smetana, Vojtěch ; Nová, Monika (advisor) ; Cimrmannová, Tereza (referee)
This work maps currant situation of development assistance in Zimbabwe. It summarizes currant situation of this activity in this country and shows basic development problems: "Double-law" system, women empowerment, "Sugar mummies and sugar daddies" phenomena, religion syncretism, fear factor, "child- headed" families and a "vicious circle of poverty". This thesis states these basic development outcomes: Microfinancing, use of "physical economy" and political changes. It is divided in two main parts; theoretical and practical. In the theoretical-one it deals with geo-population discourse and historical-political discourse so that the outcomes can to be place into context of currant development problems. In practical- one it deals with research question and hypothesis, as well as own investigation at the place. It shows the general interest in development assistance in terms of education, not only in terms of money (which was anticipated). At the end there is a discussion chapter, based mostly on personal experience, which I gained during the residencies HTF UK in 2011 and 2012. The end deals with outcomes, which were done by investigation and mentioned discourses.
Comparison of foreign aid of USA and China with the concentration on region of Latin America
Mičovská, Natália ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
The topic of this thesis is "Comparison of foreign aid of USA and China with the concentration on the region of Latin America". In the past several years, the foreign aid of People's Republic of China has grown dramatically to the region of Latin America and Caribbean. The United States is a traditional donor and Latin America is its long-term sphere of influence. Until recently, China had been recognized more as a foreign aid receiver, not as a donor. However, since the beginning of the 21st century, China has massively increased the support of developing economies. China, as an emerging donor, is not very transparent and it is very hard to estimate its future. Chinese government treats the foreign aid data as a national secret and it releases only very comprehensive data. As states, USA and China are very different, from historical or economical point of view, both have different political regimes, or standards of living. This work aims to point out the similarities and differences between the two countries and their motivation to provide foreign aid to Latin-American countries. Through the qualitative comparison I would like to prove/disprove two hypothesis: 1) Both countries provide foreign aid to develop the region of Latin America, however, both have different motivation - while for USA the...
The Impact of China's Engagement in Sub-Saharan Africa on U.S. Political and Economical Interests on the Continent (2000-2012)
Kindl, Lukáš ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Bečka, Jan (referee)
The rigorous thesis deals with China's increased engagement in Sub-Saharan Africa after 2000 and its impact on U.S. political and economic interests on the continent. In the first decade of the new millennium, China's search for natural resources, especially oil, to satisfy its growing demand, need to find new markets for exports, as well as China's aspiration to enhance its position at the international stage led Beijing to pay greater attention to Africa. China started to engage African countries through a combination of development assistance with no strings attached, except for the one-China principle, and high-profile diplomacy. The United States has become concerned that China might jeopardize its programs on democratization and governance and become a fierce economic competitor in Africa. In the first two chapters, the thesis describes the interests of China and the U.S, respectively, the main actors involved in the countries' respective Africa policies, and strategies and concrete policies these two world powers implement in Africa. The third chapter compares the U.S. and China's engagement in three case studies - on Nigeria, Angola and Sudan. The fourth chapter provides a comparison of the general features of the American and the Chinese policies towards Sub- Saharan Africa. The chapter...

Analysis of the Pontifical Missionary Societies' Activities in the Czech Republic
Hajičová, Ivana ; Ovečka, Libor (advisor) ; Lorman, Jaroslav (referee)
The aim of the thesis "Analysis of the Pontifical Missionary Societies' (PMS) Activities in the Czech Republic" is to determine to what extent the activities of Czech PMS are truly missionary. First, basic terms are defined: mission, charity, humanitarian aid, and development assistance (Chapter 1). What they all have in common is caring for others; charity and mission have religious motivation and are carried out by the Church, whereas humanitarian aid and development assistance are matters of a secular state (though in everyday use the terms are often confused). Charity, i. e. selfless help to those in need, does not have a religious goal, it is not an instrument of evangelization unlike mission, whose aim it is to proclaim the Gospel (Chapter 2). Mission lies at the heart of the PMS on a worldwide scale and for this purpose they were established: Society for the Propagation of the Faith 1822, Society of the Holy Childhood 1843, Society of St. Peter the Apostle 1889, and Missionary Union 1916 (Chapter 3). Since their renewal in the CR in 1993 the Societies have developed a wide range of membership forms and activities, and collection yields have grown tenfold (Chapter 4). What the money is spent on determines the basic character of the institution. Exact data of the National Office for 2011 and 2012 show...

Achieving the Millenium development goals in India
Vícenecová, Romana ; Stuchlíková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Bartušková, Hana (referee)
The world economy is currently going through many changes. The economic strength of developing countries has increased significantly, however the power of developed countries tends to decline. One of the emerging economies, which is gradually strengthening its position as one of the strongest players in the world, is India. Despite all the economic potential, India still ranks among the developing economies and many factors, such as poverty or hunger, keep slowing down India's growth. The biggest program, which seeks to help the developing countries, is called the Millennium Development Goals. These goals were established in 2000 by the United Nations. My bachelor's thesis aims to analyze progress in achieving the Millennium development goals in India with a focus on meeting the three specific targets related to poverty, education and women empowerment. This work captures the successes that India has already managed to reach as well as mentioning the targets that will not be met.
