DDR and child soldiers
Ardigò, Caterina ; Garb, Maja (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
The object of this Master's thesis is to investigate the role of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration of former child soldiers in the conflict of Sierra Leone. Even though extensive research has been carried out in the direct aftermath of the conflict, thus in the immediate subsequent years, few researchers focused on the long-term effects and effectiveness of the implementation of such programs. The first chapter examines the concept of peacebuilding, starting from its first definitions until the latest evolutions, the main actors, and the practices tied to it. The literature review concerning the various issues stemming from the experience of child soldiering is found in Chapter 2 of the thesis. Chapter 3 outlines the methodology we used to investigate our research question while Chapter 4 illustrates the analysis we conducted. The findings led to the conclusion that DDR programs are effective in the short-term, but this notion cannot be transposed into the long run. Thus, programs should include a long-term strategy focusing more on the psychological sphere of former combatants. Keywords Peacebuilding, Post-Conflict Reconstruction, DDR, Child Soldiers, Sierra Leone, Reintegration Title DDR and Child Soldiers: Reintegration of Child Soldiers of the Sierra Leonian Conflict

LAURENČÍKOVÁ, Štěpánka
The Czech Republic strruggles with a higher rate of recidivism than desirable. While the number of convicts in prisons is declining, so is the number of staff. Social work plays a vital role in supporting convicts towards resocialization and reintegration. This thesis on the topic of Specifics od Social Work in Prison focuses on the current situation in the context of the number of convicts and the state's criminal policy setting. Additionally, the thesis discusses factors that can influence delinquent and criminal behavior. Two goals were chosen for the practical part of this work: to find out how social work is implemented in prisons from the perspective of social workers and to find out in selected prisons what procedures, methods and techniques a social worker uses within treatment programs with assigned individuals. The research was carried out using a qualitative research stratégy, where open coding created codes that were further processed in the ATLAS.ti software program. This program was also used to schematically illustrate the results. The conducted interviews were analyzed, and through the interpretation of the collected data, it was discovered what are the specifics of providing support from social workers in relation to prisoners and what approaches, methods and techniques social worker use through individually set treatments programs. The results also highlight the challenges, limits and barriers associated with providing effective interventions. The contribution of this work is a deeper insight into social work in prisons from the perspective of social workers and also getting acquainted with the challenges, limits and barriers that may disrupt the provision of effective interventions.
Reintegration of Former Drug Abusers in Society
ZEMANOVÁ, Karolína
The bachelor thesis deals with the experience of former substance users with reintegration into society after leaving a therapeutic community or psychiatric hospital. The aim of the thesis is to find out the application in the personal lives of former users of addictive substances after leaving a treatment centre. The bachelor thesis is divided into two parts - the theoretical one and the practical one. The theoretical part deals with the definition of the most important terms associated with the bachelor thesis. In the initial part, there are described individual addictive substances, substance abuse, and options of the treatment of substance addiction. The next part focuses on reintegration and its basic terms. The final part deals with aftercare. The practical part concentrates on the survey for which were chosen two research questions dealing with the way of integration of former users of addictive substances into society and with one of the greatest obstacles that former substance users face during the reintegration. For getting the results was chosen a qualitative survey and the interview method, concretely a method of the semi-structured interview. The examined sample consisted of eleven informants who were chosen by the self-selection and the snowball sampling. Obtained data were subsequently analysed via the grounded theory method. The results of the survey revealed that the best means for the successful reintegration is the focus on aftercare and, ideally, stay in the aftercare centre. Having secured employment, quality family background, and financial security is necessary for easier maintenance of abstinence. The bachelor thesis may serve as a manual for various facilities working with users of addictive substances, such as therapeutic communities, psychiatric hospitals, and aftercare centres.

Stloukalová, Kateřina ; Novák, Petr (advisor) ; Drahoňovský, Jan (referee)
This thesis "Social factors of desistence and effective reintegration after custodial sentence" deals with factors emanating from society and arising in the social environment of an individual who has committed criminal activity in the past and has currently renounced this life path and thus manages to avoid (further) recidivism. The aim of the thesis is to find out which of the social factors and to what extent they influenced the selected desisters. In the theoretical part of the diploma thesis, basic concepts and terms that are closely related to the given issue will be defined. Factors influencing desistance and successful reintegration after returning from prison sentence will be described. The empirical part will be based on the case studies of people who have passed the sentence and are currently more than 5 years without recidivism, some of them own companies and have completed their degrees and are "successful" in their free lives. Interviews with people close to them will also be presented. Those will reveal something about the criminal style of thinking of these persons.
Owning Sudan's disarmament, demobilization and reintegration process : between theory and practice
Mackuliaková, Kristína ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
In a broader sense, this thesis examines the extent to which the international community decides on the application and shape of standard security templates in post-conflict environments. These standard templates are increasingly criticized for their inflexibility and inability to adapt to the actual conditions and needs on ground. In order to alleviate this criticism, as well as improve the success of these programs, the international community recently embraced the concept of national ownership. Whether it is a rhetorical concept and political tool and how its understanding differs between theory and reality are the main topics of this thesis. Specifically, the paper analyzes the concept of national ownership in the process of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) of ex-combatants on the example of Sudan from 2003 until 2013. Sudanese DDR process has been defined as nationally owned, but nevertheless criticized for the blind following of international standards and overall inability to adapt to the context. The objective of the thesis was set out to establish what the interpretation of national ownership was in theory and compare it with the type of ownership that had taken place in practice. The main part of this study is the analysis of the control exercised by national and...
How a drogue ex-user see a period of his addiction
Hronková, Veronika ; Kubišová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Hauser, Michael (referee)
Subject: How a drogue ex-user see a period of his addiction. Abstract: The work focus on the actual situation of ex-users. These people were fighting with an addiction and now they are a part of the majority society. The qualitative research, inspired by a grounded theory, try to approach their point of view. What they think about their past and how do they see their relations with a family, friends and a vicinage. Not just in that period but nowadays as well. Relationships with home-folks are stigmatized by a degree of drug addiction. The smaller addiction the smaller losses. Once a drug user is falling down into the drug trap, the losses depend on how deep he will fall. On the bottom there are no friends, no family, just nothing. Some of the drug users do not fall to the bottom, they do their decision earlier. We call that decision a break point ( a moment when they decide to abstain). A break point comes individually and it is connected to an "interior border" of each person. Anyway, it is a moment, when an individual concerned decide to live a different way. It is a very intense moment and very fundamental for a abstinence success. We have used an interview to study not just this phenomenon. During the interview we tried to find out how a life looks with and without an addiction. Key words: addiction,...
Possibilities of Independence and Reintegration of Clients Using Long-term Transitional Housing for Homeless People - Focusing on Prague
Brabencová, Eva ; Kodymová, Pavla (advisor) ; Davidová, Ivana (referee)
Diploma thesis Possibilities of independence and reintegration of clients using long term transitional housing for homeless people - focusing on Prague deals with problem of barriers in a reintegration process of homeless people. It is a primarily unavailability of follow up affordable housing and non-existent system of social housing in the Czech republic. The consequence is long term remain in the transitional housing or in a hostel without possibility of full return to the society. This problem is not resolved neither providing social benefits for housing. Because often the people in need don't get them or the benefits are abused by the owners of the hostels. This metod of solving is very overpriced and unpromising for the future. The solution could be creating a system of the social housing, which would include a few levels of housing which would follow one another. The top would be an ordinary affordable housing. Integral parts of social housing are supporting social services which follow needs of each client. This diploma thesis introduces several projects which are closest to the social housing. The important part of these projects is cooperation with a local authority. There is essential interest of politicians of homelessness to support these activities and interact. For this reason the...

Prokopová, Hana ; Veteška, Jaroslav (referee)
The aim of the rigorous work is to identify and characterize the innovative concept of penitentiary care applied in the treatment of convicted men in the building Open Prison in Jiřice. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of elements of innovation at the architectural level (modification of outdoor spaces "Open Prison", specific accommodation for convicts, construction of a breeding zone, cultivation zone, ornamental gardens) and at the socio-psychological level. This is reflected in the professional work and application of specifically focused activities of the treatment program. It is based on a higher degree of professional intervention in terms of the application of the method of "accompaniment" and "case management", an open approach of employees in a mutually constructive, supportive communication with convicts. In the practical part, a qualitative survey will be used, which will aim to compare selected areas of activities of the program of treatment of convicts included in the execution of imprisonment in a ward with a medium level of security and a low level of security. Case studies were chosen as the research method. The intention is to find out whether the applied foreign trends of penitentiary care in Open Prison in Jiřice correspond to the needs of convicts in terms of the overall...

Vigner, Martin ; Kváča, Vladimír (advisor) ; Hejzlarová, Eva (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on people who have served their sentences. Specifically, it maps the success in their social integration after release from prison. The theoretical basis of the work lies in the multifactor criminogenetic theories and concepts of social exclusion. Multifactor criminogenetic theories are mentioned as one of the foundations of the penitentiary prediction tool SARPO (Comprehensive Analysis of Risks and Needs of Convicts). This tool is used in the work for better orientation in the needs and risks of people in the process of release. The theoretical anchoring of the work also deals with the problem of recidivism and adaptation after release from prison. And the issue of homelessness in connection with substance abuse and also in connection with crime. Furthermore, attention is paid to the problem of indebtedness, which can complicate the social situation of people after serving a sentence. The factual context of the researched topic is devoted to the causes of the difficult resocialization of released prisoners and to the reasons why recidivists are most often prosecuted. There are also some important statistical data concerning the number of persons imprisoned in the Czech Republic in comparison with EU countries. Attention is also paid to the amendment of the Insolvency Act...
