Historical Examples and the Search for National Identity in texts of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and Roman Dmowski. A Comparative Study
Scholz, Milan ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Doubek, Vratislav (referee) ; Kolář, Pavel (referee)
The doctoral thesis deals with comparative analysis of historical examples in the search for national identity in texts of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (1850-1937) and Roman Dmowski (1864-1939). Both Masaryk and Dmowski belonged to prominent representatives of public and political life in their countries at the end of the 19th and in first decades of the 20th centuries. The question of national identity is a theme often associates with their life and work. Masaryk and Dmowski influenced Czech and Polish politics, political and intellectual thought before 1914. During the First World War, they were leaders of Czechoslovak and Polish politics in West European emigration (Masaryk as the president of the Czechoslovak National Committee, Dmowski as the president of the Polish National Committee). Nevertheless, in the postwar period, their career diverged. Masaryk became president of Czechoslovakia and symbol of the Czechoslovak identity, Dmowski represented rather the opposition against mainstream development in postwar Poland. The first and the second parts of the thesis deal with Masaryk's (first part) and Dmowski's (second part) concept of historical examples in search of national identity in context of their thought and life. Therefore, these parts are organized chronologically and pay attention to...

Bicanová, Jana ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Irmanová, Eva (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on the issues of forming national identity and related possibility to reinterpret Hungarian uprising of 1956 in context of sixtieth anniversary of the historical event. It highlights the most common meanings that were linked to the event while focusing on presenting the memory policy of governing party Fidesz. The intention of this thesis is to explore the way how exhibition of museums legitimize the policy of Fidesz. To this end, it utilizes a combination of classical study of literature dealing with said subject and musicological analysis based on five categories that were inspired by Aristotel's approach to drama, where the used sources are two exhibitions that were organized due to the sixtieth anniversary of the historical event. The conclusion of the study is based on the comparison of the exhibitions, rhetoric of speeches delivered by politicians and the theoretical framework described in the opening part of the text.
The Reconstructions of Skopje and the Formation of Macedonian National Identity
Nedbalová, Andrea ; Králová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Žíla, Ondřej (referee)
The capital city of the Republic of Macedonia, Skopje, has undergone two important architectural changes during the last half a century. Both of these, the renewal of the city after the devastating earthquake of 1963 and the extensive architectural project "Skopje 2014" launched in 2010, included content which focused on the formation of Macedonian national identity. The diploma thesis The Reconstructions of Skopje and the Formation of Macedonian National Identity analyses how architecture and urbanism was used to form Macedonian national identity. As these two events had very different initial conditions, the nature of these reconstructions, together with the promoted visions of national identity and their presentation, differed considerably. The rebuilding of Skopje after the earthquake presented Macedonian national identity to a greater extent through a strong ideological content based solely on visions of the future. In comparison, the project "Skopje 2014" presented an interpretation of national identity through specific symbols. This construction was based on the interpretation of historical events, resulting in a new understanding of the historical continuity of the Macedonian nation. The fact that two vastly different visions of Macedonian national identity, presented through the recreation...
Ukrainian national identity on the territory of Western Ukraine under Polish rule in the interwar period (1918-1939)
Riabushkina, Sofiia ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Zilynskyj, Bohdan (referee)
The national politics of interwar Poland aimed at the full assimilation of the national minorities, including Ukrainians who lived in the occupied region of Eastern Galicia. This thesis studies the political basis, tools and outcomes of polonization policy during the period between 1918 and 1939 on the territory of Eastern Galicia and its main city Lviv. Deep analysis of Polish and Ukrainian political doctrines, Polish legislation, books, articles and periodical of the interwar period, as well as of modern historiography (both Polish and Ukrainian) resulted in developing of a comprehensive understanding of why the policy of polonization, aimed on population of Eastern Galicia failed to change historical Ukrainian identity. The data gathered in the analysis proves that the Polish government used tremendously rigid, if not brutal, tools of assimilation, and it resulted in rejection of the Polish national identity by Ukrainians. Moreover, confidence in the fact that Ukrainians are nothing more than underdeveloped Poles-to-be rise led to the rise of Ukrainian radical nationalism on the eve of the Second World War. Petrnoušková, Anna ; Marková, Alena (advisor) ; Maslowski, Nicolas (referee)
The master thesis "The creation and reproduction of historical consciousness on the example of the association Radecký Praha" deals with the historical consciousness, its creation and reproduction. The theoretical part defines not only historical consciousness but also pays attention to the related issues, such as collective memory, historical memory, sites of memory, or national identity, due to the fact that the boundaries between collective memory and historical consciousness are often at least unclear. Theoretical part is primarily based on the works of Maurice Halbwachs, Jan Assmann, Miroslav Hroch and Pierre Nora. The empirical part of this study concludes the research of the association Radetzky Prague, which seeks to return the monument of Marshal Radetzky on the Malostranské náměstí. The research tries to describe and understand the ways of creation and reproduction of historical consciousness of its members throughout the analysis of qualitative interviews. Mentioned authors already provide a certain methodological background research. Conclusion contains a summary and a comparison of research results with theses of authors that are dealing with similar themes. This work is not a purely historical or sociological one; it is trying to stay somewhere between historical and sociological...
Awarness of their own distinctiveness among Serbs from Dalmatia. And developement of the Serbian state idea in the Kingdom of Dalmatia in the years 1878 - 1905

Title: National identity and assimilation in relation to the social environment in Plovdiv (18th - 19th century) Abstract: The dissertation presented here arises from the perception of national identity being a kind of collective identity, which is designated by state (political) as well as non-state (cultural) nation-constituting symbols. I have tried to examine the permanence, stability and objectivity of these symbols in relation to the social environment in Plovdiv during the process of national awakening as part of Bulgarian national movement (18th - 19th century). During this period the central position in Plovdiv's social environment was held by a numerous group of people so-called Graecomen. Graecomen voluntarily renounced their Bulgarian-origin identity and exchanged it for a Greek identity. The origins of Graecomania may be found in the long-term cultural and economical co-existence of the Bulgarians and the Greeks. Since the Middle Ages there was a stable Greek community in Plovdiv, which dominated significantly the social climate. This dominance became the key motivating factor for the spread of Graecomen as Bulgarian burgers tried through the means of a favourable marriage to infiltrate the Greek community and in this way to achieve a higher social status. The highest level of intensity of...
Bautzen and Budyšin: Language Ideologies in the Capital City of Sorbs
Škrob, Jan ; Samek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Zandlová, Markéta (referee)
In this thesis, I attempt to describe and analyse language ideologies relevant in the specific situation of the Sorbian minority in the city of Bautzen (Sorbian: Budyšin) - a city with a clear German majority at the same time considered a cultural, social and political centre of Sorbs - with a special emphasis on links between language and nationalism. Focusing on these links, I also examine the specific role of language for maintainance of Sorbian national identity. I also view Sorbian language ideologies in the broader context of social and political relations in and around Bautzen, whereas I, among other topics, inquire into recently significant hatred of local German radical right towards the Sorbian minority. At the same time, I attempt to capture the power relations between German and Sorbian languages. Apart from the paradigm of language ideologies, I am also informed by works of certain poststructuralist authors, especially due to their emphasis on constructivism regarding identities and language mechanisms. Keywords: language, language ideologies, nationalism, language nationalism, identities, national identity, ethnicity, language and power, Sorbian, German, language and politics, language contact
Czech Emigration in Western Europe, USA and Canada; National Consciousness and Relationship to Homeland in Comparation with Attitudes of Czechs Living in National State
Feitl, David ; Šatava, Leoš (advisor) ; Lupták Burzová, Petra (referee)
The subject of this thesis is a diversified conception of Czechishness. The main proposition is a comparison of types and aspects of relation to the country in the case of (political) emigrants after 1948 in contrast with the "home-based" non-emigrant Czech population. The thesis will briefly mention also the preceding periods of Czech emigration, the socio-economic situation at the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries, the 1950s etc. All this will be put into the context of the historical turning of the Czech lands away from the West, despite the latter being the destination of the post-February emigrants. In this respect the description of social-political events as perceived by the citizens at the time, by the official propaganda and by emigrants is crucial. The image of the West or emigrants as perceived then together with other conclusions will be compared with the basic theories of migration and migration policy. In the section on political emigration legislation of the period incl. its wording will be quoted. The thesis focuses exclusively on emigrants to the West, especially to Western Europe, the USA and Canada, but also to Australia and Israel. It reflects the direction and the main centres of emigration, checks the relevance of information on the numbers of exiled Czechs, their...
Multi-Vectorism in Belarusian Foreign Policy
Behrends, Haylee ; Svoboda, Karel (advisor) ; Šír, Jan (referee)
This research examines the multi-vectored nature of Belarusian foreign policy since 1996 when Alexander Lukashenka solidified his regime in Belarus until today. The trends in Belarusian foreign policy are analyzed through the scope of interdependency and its intricate interplay with Belarusian national identity, or in other words, how President Lukashenka understands and interprets the Belarusian people. Since the early 2000s, it appeared that Belarus changed its foreign policy in an attempt to become less dependent on Russia and more open to working with new partners. Officially, Lukashenka has consistently maintained a multi-vector approach to Belarusian foreign policy and also in practice, despite intermittent speculation that Belarus might drastically change the dynamics of its foreign policy. Decreasing dependence is not motivation enough to completely alter perceived stability and a reluctance for change among the Belarusian people. Lukashenka uses the flexibility of his foreign policy to try to extract some benefits from global partners; however, the status quo of Lukashenka's foreign policies continues to remain intact. Keywords Belarus, President Alexander Lukashenka, Multi-vector, multipolar, foreign policy, interdependence, national identity, dependence
