POTUŽNÍKOVÁ, Eliška
The qualification thesis entitled Schwarzenberg Archivist František Tyl in mutual correspondence with the historian Josef Kalousek - an annotated edition of the preserved correspondence is based on the study of personal documents and aims to bring its reader a picture of the life and activities of Schwarzenberg archivist and librarian František Tyl (1830-1899) mutual interaction with the important Czech historian Josef Kalousek (1838-1915). František Josef Tyl worked for many years as an archivist at the Schwarzenberg Castle Archive in Orlík nad Vltavou, where he probably also met Josef Kalousek (during his frequent research in the South Bohemian archives) for the first time. The diploma thesis begins with a topic with a list of used archives and literature. The text itself is divided into three main parts, namely acquaintance with both actors (including information about their professional work or author's work), analysis and thematic analysis of edited documents and an annotated edition of mutual correspondence from 1885-1898. The text of the annotated edition is a necessary editorial note and contains all preserved correspondence between František Tyl and Josef Kalousek, which is in the personal collection of J. Kalousek in the National Museum Archive and in the collection of the Orlík nad Vltavou Agricultural and Forestry Archive located in the State Regional Archive in Třeboň. Ninety-one documents made available for publication are arranged chronologically. Each document has a brief abstract with the date and place of origin of the document and its short description, a natural part of the edition is also a register of names. The last part of the presented work contains an exhaustive list of sources, literature, Internet resources and, among other things, pictorial appendices.
Climate and settlement dynamics based on comparison of dendroclimatic and archaeological data of South Bohemian holocene.
VOBEJDA, Libor
The environment is influenced by the ever changing system of interacting forces. Changes in the climate are amongst many crucial factors that determine life conditions on Earth. All organisms have to cope with the environmental changes and humans are no exception. This thesis is focused on description of climate changes during the Holocene geological epoch. The climate is delineated based on proxy datasets. South Bohemian proxy data, mainly tree ring chronology, are used as primary sources for the reconstruction of past climate. These proxy datasets are complemented by various climatic reconstructions covering the area of central Europe. In order to assess the connection of past human societies to climate, a comparison between climate and settlement proxies is conducted. As an example of the settlement proxies we can list relative population density and location of dwellings. Target populations are agricultural prehistoric and historic societies.

(Not) A Friend of the city? Department stores from the 1960s to the 1980s in the small towns of South Bohemia.
NOVOSÁDOVÁ, Kateřina
My thesis deals with the phenomenon of department stores built between the 1960s and the 1980s in small towns in South Bohemia. They are buildings fashioned in the socialist style which often had strong impact on the appearance of the town. The main goal of my work is not only to document urban changes of the historic centres of the chosen towns and to reconstruct the circumstances of the constructions of those department stores, but also to describe their art historical aspect. I have chosen department stores in Písek, Blatná, Protivín, Vodňany, Strakonice, Vimperk and Prachatice which were not built by the company Prior. The main investor was the company Pramen or Jednota. The main primary sources of the research are from files in the respective town halls, from state district archives and newspapers of that period. Those sources have often not been published yet. The secondary literature is used for a comparison. The sources help to clarify and assess how the chosen buildings changed the appearances of the towns. The thesis describes some features of the individual buildings related to their functions and depicts their facades, so called "billboards in the town", which provided the main communication with the people. And then I try to find variations and combinations of materials used in the construction of the buildings. The thesis also deals with the artistic decoration complementing the architecture of the buildings and how much of it has remained. The text provides not only comparison of the buildings in small towns in the given areas, but there is also a comparison with major department stores of the company Prior in regional capitals in former Czechoslovakia. At the end it touches on the question of the future of the examined buildings and their possible preservation as national monuments.
Neobaroque as the instrument of the aristocratic representation in South Bohemia
SKOŘEPOVÁ, Eva
The diploma thesis entitled The Neo-Baroque as a Tool of Aristocratic Representation in South Bohemia is based on a bachelor's thesis written by the same author, Eva Skořepová. The subject of the bachelor's thesis was the construction history of the Castle in Chlum u Třeboně, focusing on its Neo-Baroque reconstruction and contextualizing the Neo-Baroque style within historicist styles. The author has followed up her research in the present thesis which highlights three Neo-Baroque South Bohemian buildings whose construction was initiated by members of nobility. The buildings include the Castle in Chlum u Třeboně whose Neo-Baroque reconstruction was commissioned by Archduke Franz Ferdinand d´Este, Hardtmuth Family Residence in České Budějovice, built by Franz and Anna von Hardtmuth, and Berchtold Family Tomb in Neznašov, close to Týn nad Vltavou, commissioned by Juliana Schnöblingová, née Berchtoldová. The author conducted detailed research of the nobility who commissioned the buildings, the history of the locations and construction history of the buildings, pointing out connections which might have influenced the choice of the Neo-Baroque style. At the times of stylistic fragmentation, the Neo-Baroque style had both aesthetic qualities and political and ideological hidden meanings. The author examines the meanings and considers the advent of historicist styles in relation to the architectural development in the 19th century. The author also reflects the contemporary view of the Baroque that influenced the acceptance of Neo-Baroque forms within historicist styles. Another essential factor considered in the thesis is the concept of Austrian national style based on the Neo-Baroque, as it was coined and advocated by Albert Ilg. The final part of the thesis seeks to find answers to the key question: "Why the Neo-Baroque?".
From the history of mining, processing and the use of peat in South Bohemia in the 20th century
PETRÁŠEK, Karel
The thesis describes the development of peat industry history in the South Bohemian region against the background of economic history from the beginning of the 20th century up to year 1960. The author divided the text into three main sections. The first one defines the significance of peatbogs to the landscape and analyzes the development of their legal protection. It also includes the general development of peat industry in several European countries, the basis of which is used as a collation to the situation in the territory of Czechoslovakia. The second part covers the analysis of South Bohemian peat industry in the first half of the 20th century. Based on the examples taken from a series of extractive areas and a wide range of archives, the author illustrates the differences in the raw material perception, extraction approaches and management, and the daily life of workers. From these findings, general conclusions are drawn, aiming at creating a comprehensive image of the situation. The last chapter focuses on the analysis of the influences that the changing postwar situation in the politics and economy had over the peat production. The changes which affected the peat industry in the 50s of the 20th century are drawn on the fortunes of particular sole traders and peat works. These took the position of the small businessmen as the only producers of the raw material in Czechoslovakia for the rest of the century.
