Information behavior and learning in the context of new media: Digital games and simulations as complex systems for information representation
Buchtová, Michaela ; Šisler, Vít (advisor) ; Steinerová, Jela (referee) ; Landová, Hana (referee)
This dissertation considers digital games and simulations as complex systems of information representation and explores their specific aspects influencing the process of knowledge acquisition. It focuses on process of mental model creation, information behavior and situational emotional and cognitive engagement. The methodological approach is grounded in variety of disciplines including information science, educational science, new media studies and computer science. The main method used is educational experiment. The use of digital game-based and non-digital game-based educational intervention is compared to similar program based on traditional schooling methods and classic lectures. The experiment outcomes are divided into four large segments exploring influence of digital games on process of mental models creation, motivation for future information behavior, situational emotional experience and social interaction.
Providing Access to Electronic Information Resources at Jan Palach Library CUFA
Vejvoda, Tomáš ; Boudová, Lucie (advisor) ; Němečková, Lenka (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with providing access to electronic resources (ER) at Jan Palach Library CUFA. The theoretical part of the thesis defines term ER, describes their typology, deals with acquisition and management and introducing tools for using them. The thesis describes experiences of Jan Palach Library CUFA with providing access to ER and deals with information behavior of ER users. The aim of the thesis is to describe a situation in ER management on example of an university library on Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. The practical part of the thesis is an user research on the method of the survey which results that situation in ER use is slowly getting better, users do not feel foreign language ER production as problem and just only small group of users attended workshop dedicated to ER, because users do not feel the need to. Univerzita Karlova v Praze, Filozofická fakulta, Ústav informačních studií a knihovnictví. Vedoucí bakalářské práce PhDr. Hana Slámová, PhD. Abstrakt Bakalářská práce se zabývá informačním chováním a informačními potřebami uživatelů Střediska vědeckých informací Ústavu organické chemie a biochemie AV ČR, v.v.i. Abstract This bachelor thesis...
Meeting users in their spaces: key findings on discovery to delivery
Connaway, Lynn Silipigni ; Cyr, Chris ; Gallagher, Peggy ; Hood, Erin M. ; Brannon, Brittany ; Holloway, Jay (author of presentation and video speach)
OCLC Research has been studying how individuals get their information and resources and how they engage with technology for almost two decades. We have learned that convenience often is one of the factors that most drives individuals’ decisions for getting information and resources. However, convenience is a moving target and is dependent upon the context and situation of the individual’s need. Many factors will influence the decision-making process, such as how quickly the information or resource is needed, how important that information is to the individual need, and how much effort is required to get access to the information or resource. Our findings indicate that individuals often do not consider the library as the first place to get information and sometimes do not consider libraries at all. This often is attributed to the complexity and misunderstanding of library processes for acquiring resources and to not knowing resources or options for accessing and acquiring these resources through the library. Many individuals opt for open content since it is easy to discover and readily and quickly available in full-text. We have conducted semi-structured individual interviews with undergraduate and graduate/post graduate students and faculty in Australia and the U.S. to identify how they discover, access and acquire resources and why they make these choices and decisions, including their format preferences. We also have conducted focus group interviews with resource sharing and ILL librarians in Australia and the U.S. to identify their workflows and to discuss ideas to improve these processes to better meet the needs of their users. The findings from these interviews provide ideas for enhancing the discovery to delivery experience for both users and librarians.

Analysis of user behavior due to the storing of digital footprints without knowledge of the user
Pappová, Michaela ; Souček, Martin (advisor) ; Ivánek, Jiří (referee)
Digital footprint designates data left behind a user movement in the digital environment or with the interaction with it. We distinguish active and passive digital footprint, together creating the digital identity of a user. The biggest benefit of the digital footprint for a user is the personalization of internet content. It also creates the reputation of a user on the internet. Other parties can utilize a digital footprint for purposes of marketing, science, HR research, and criminology. Digitial footprint can be actively affected and limited by users and different strategies for managing it exists. The aim of this thesis is to analyze user behavior of students in digital environment and their knowledge of digital footprint. It's focused on the relation between users knowledge about digital footprint existence and his real behavior. To fulfill the main purpose of the thesis researched questions are stated and the strategies of user behavior and managing their data are investigated afterwards. The knowledge of students and their real behavior with an accent on their motivation and reasons are determined in semi structured interviews. The relation between knowledge and real behavior has been found, as well as a strong influence of this relation on a user behavior strategy online.
Nurses'information behaviour
Málková, Michaela ; Jarolímková, Adéla (advisor) ; Lipková, Helena (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with nurses' information behaviour working in the Institue for Clinical and Experimental Medicine at the Clinic for Anesthetics and Intensive Care. It focuses on why and how the nurses look for information related to their field and how they work with the information afterwards. It briefly outlines the characteristics of the institute and it gives a description of nursing and the nurses' job. Then, it points out nurses' motivation to find information and their orientation in information sources. The research was realised in the form of qualitative structured interviews with the nurses. The conclusion of this thesis is dedicated to the summary of the found information, it answers the defined research questions and evaluates the information provision in practice.
