Political Thought of Czechoslovak Dissidents in the Years 1977 - 1993
Švehlová, Veronika ; Halamka, Tomáš (advisor) ; Franěk, Jakub (referee)
The diploma thesis entitled The Political Thought of Czechoslovak Dissidents in the Years 1977 - 1993 examines the political thought of three representatives of Czechoslovak dissent, Rudolf Battek, Václav Havel and Václav Benda. The main aim is to find out whether the Czechoslovak dissent included political thinking and came up with its own constructive theories on the ideal state system or whether it was limited to criticism of the contemporary regime. In terms of methodology, the thesis works with textual analysis of primary sources of three selected dissidents. Based on the textual analysis, it concludes by using a comparative method to compare and integrate the political thought of the selected dissidents with a focus on a better or ideal arrangement of the future state. The thesis concludes that the analyzed representatives of Czechoslovak dissent, in addition to criticizing the regime, also focused on political thinking and searched for a future state organization. Political thought and theories of a successful state were not their primary concern and do not represent a systematic positive theory. Their political thinking was based on their overall philosophical ideas and the context of their critique of the communist regime in contemporary Czechoslovakia. They do not call their ideas...
Czechoslovak dissent as a learning society
Padevět, Jiří
The diploma thesis is dealing with the problematics of Czechoslovak/Czech dissent, especially in the years from 1977 to 1989 and with its position as a learning society on its own. In the text, the status of dissent in the general society is described and followed, along with the ostracization of it, which ultimately led to a forming of a parallel polis, which included both parallel educational and cultural systems. Those were based on transmitting and sharing knowledge and skills inside of the community. Considering many activities performed by dissent organizations, the thesis takes interest mainly in four educational and cultural structures: home seminars, home theatre, samizdats and so-called festival of the second culture, both personally and organizationally bonded to Charter 77. These activites are not perceived only from the cultural history perspective, but more importantly with the help of andragogy and learning society concept. In conclusion, the thesis will focus on such specific educational and cultural topics and not only its impact on the parallel polis of dissent, but on the society in general, as well. The main intention of the theoretical and analytic part of the thesis is to analyze, identify and describe key milestones and phenomenons, tied with the informal learning of adults...
Dissents and their role in judicial decision-making
Stádník, Jakub ; Hřebejk, Jiří (referee)
Dissents and their role in judicial decision-making Jakub Stádník Abstract This thesis deals with dissents to judicial decisions, i.e., dissenting opinions of the judges which are published along with the decision. In the Czech context, these are mainly dissenting opinions of the Constitutional Court judges, which (despite the lack of direct binding force) occupy a significant space not only in academic discussions but can also become the basis for future changes in legal opinion. Despite this practical significance of the dissenting opinions, however, they have received rather little attention or, with a few exceptions, have not been dealt with in a broader context in any text to date. This was the main motivation for writing my thesis. The most important context in relation to the existence of dissents is their impact on the legitimacy of decisions. There are views that consider dissenting opinions to be beneficial to the legitimacy of courts and their decisions, as well as views that are quite the opposite. Thus, the primary goal of this paper is to analyze the role of dissenting opinions in terms of their impact on the legitimacy of decisions. This is an aspect that runs throughout the whole text. The thesis begins by defining the terms dissent and dissenting opinion and seeks to introduce both foreign...

A memed Revolution?: Content analysis on how Twitter users used memes as a means for political expressions of dissent during the 11J protests in Cuba
León Carpio, Luis Orlando ; Turková, Kateřina (advisor) ; Dimitrov, Michal (referee)
The present thesis addresses Twitter memes as a means for political expressions of dissent during the protests that took place in Cuba on the 11 of July 2021. It focuses on the nuances in the discourses that memes conveyed regarding the 11J protests and the COVID-19 crisis and it is aimed to the nature of the messages to understand their main features and stance and make inferences about the motivation behind the act of posting. In doing so, content analysis with a mixed approach - quantitative and qualitative, stressing the latter - was applied to the 111 memes found in a time frame consisting of one week, from 8 to 15 July 2021. The analysis permitted us to conclude that memes carried the main and simplified opinions of Cubans, made references to the political and sanitary crises, targeted politicians and their supporters as the main forms of dissent. Politically, memes helped netizens to criticize the Government, and the political and ideological system, among other things, mainly through humor; although serious memes were also present. Memes, primarily statics and recognized as a nucleus content, received between 300 to 1000 likes, and were produced mainly by common users. Surprisingly, most of them were from outside Cuba.
Analysis of discussion topies in the Václav Havel Library in 2012-2021
Šimůnková, Natálie ; Novotný, David Jan (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
The basic idea of the thesis is to examine the interconnection of the media field and the civic sector on the example of the Václav Havel Library - a public benefit society founded in 2004, which organizes various seminars, readings, exhibitions, lectures, debates, concerts and theatre performances. The theoretical part deals with the basic concepts of journalism and civil society, while its second section explains the specificities of the civil sector emerging from the dissident environment in the Visegrad countries. The environment of dissent also formed a significant part of the life of Václav Havel, who became a symbol of civic engagement worldwide, and the Václav Havel Library now preserves his literary, dramatic, dissident and political legacy. The ambition of this thesis is to introduce the public to the Library's production and compare its real programme schema with its media image, to reveal which programmes of the Václav Havel Library came through the media gates in 2012 and 2022, to identify the most media successful programmes and to interpret the results. The Václav Havel Library invests time and effort in promoting its productions, using its own online television channel, the Havel Channel, and establishing collaborations with media houses, which allows it to become part of the...

Challenging Hegemony: Coercion, Repression and Protest in Liberal Democracies.
Čapinská, Barbora ; Kýrová, Lucie (advisor) ; Gagnon, Jean-Paul (referee) ; Wahlström, Mattias (referee)
Barbora Čapinská Abstract for dissertation thesis Challenging hegemony: coercion, repression, and protest in liberal democracies Year of defence: 2022 Abstract: This dissertation project identifies and classifies the types of coercive and repressive methods liberal democratic states use to prevent, resist, or suppress protest via analysis of secondary literature from several disparate academic fields. Despite the substantial fragmentation of the relevant research, it systematizes and clarifies the terminology used to describe these phenomena and combines the extant findings from all relevant research strands. Above all, the project stresses the fact that repressions are employed in response to a threat posed by the challengers, but the degree of this threat, or respectively legitimacy of the protest, is influenced or even constructed by the mass media coverage of protest and social movements. By endorsing a discourse-theoretical prism and the concept of hegemony, a relational definition of state, and a three-dimensional view of power, the author proposes to view protest and repression as a hegemonic struggle, in which protest is a counter-hegemonic discourse and the state an embodiment of hegemony suppressing challenges. To supplement existent typologies, the author introduces the concepts 'institutional...
