Analýza přírůstu smrku ztepilého (Picea abies) pěstovaného v monokultuře, porostní směsi a strukturovaném porostu na ŠLP ML Křtiny
Jarošová, Kateřina
This bachelor thesis deals with the evaluation of spruce production in three structures. Monoculture, a stand mix of European beech and Norway spruce, and a structurally differentiated forest converted to a selection forest with Norway spruce, Silver fir and European beech are evaluated. When evaluating the distribution of thickness and volume, the structurally rich stand is closest to sustainable management. In terms of the comparison of thicknesses, the monoculture has the highest competence, due to the highest number of individuals in the main stand. For the crown projections, the highest level of competibility is in mixed stands, mainly due to space filling by beech. In terms of growth of the tree base area (BAI), the main stand of the forest is the most productive in the conversion to selection and reaches the highest values. In a selective forest, the measure of thickness competiveness is somewhat biased by the high frequency of individuals concentrated in a relatively small area. This fact increases the thickness-competition index even when the trees involved are understory.
Visual attention to faces in intersexual and intrasexual selection
Pátková, Žaneta ; Třebická Fialová, Jitka (advisor) ; Lukavský, Jiří (referee) ; Stirratt, Michael (referee)
This thesis focuses on visual attention towards faces in intersexual and intrasexual selection. It consists of two main parts. The first part begins with a brief overview of the intersexual and intrasexual selection mechanisms. Within the framework of intersexual selection, facial attractiveness is discussed, with its putative link to health and immune system function. Within the framework of intrasexual selection, the thesis focuses on perceived facial dominance and formidability and their connection to actual characteristics. Moreover, specific facial traits and morphological features connected with judgements of attractiveness, dominance, and formidability are described. Given the scarce evidence of direct visual attention towards facial features connected with judgements of facial attractiveness and dominance or formidability, we discuss the eye-tracking method, which can measure direct visual attention. A brief summary of eye-tracking studies focusing on visual attention to faces, especially during attractiveness and dominance assessments, is provided. Finally, the thesis focuses on how individual sensory modalities (visual, olfactory and vocal) relate to each other in the perception of individuals and the detection of cues to an individual's quality. The second part of this thesis includes...
Strategické cíle Ruska v pásmech otřesu v Africe a středním východě: soupeřen se Západem
Schwarzer, Jiří ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Weinfurter, Jaroslav (referee)
This thesis focuses on Russia's strategic goals in Africa and the Middle East. To help gain deeper understanding of Russia's behaviour in these two regions, the author utilizes the concept of shatterbelts developed by Saul B. Cohen. Shatterbelts are regions that are highly fragmented by civil wars and other internal issues while also at the same time destabilized by two or more competing great powers. Africa and the Middle East both fit the definition of a shatterbelt. Apart from the research question concerning Russia's strategic goals, two hypotheses are presented. The first one asks whether Russia is currently reviving the Soviet Union's Cold War strategy for the two shatterbelts in order to restore its first-power status. The second hypothesis questions whether Russia utilizes military power as a main tool to achieve its objectives in both shatterbelts. In order to answer the research question, a qualitative approach is utilized, and two case studies are selected, each concerning the country of one of the shatterbelts where Russia has seen the most success: the Central African Republic and Syria. This study concludes that Russia mostly targets states that face dire security issues and are largely dysfunctional. Moscow's goals are grouped into four main categories: geostrategic, economic,...
Photojournalism after Digitalization: State of Photojournalism in the Czech Republic
Lábová, Sandra ; Silverio, Robert (advisor) ; Nilsson, Maria Elisabeth (referee) ; Allan, Stuart (referee)
This dissertation undertakes ethnographic research to examine photojournalism in the Czech Republic comprehensively. It builds on the importance of news images in the media representation of reality while considering the authenticity of photography. It stresses photojournalists' role in gatekeeping decision-making and discusses the challenges they face in the evolving media market and developing technology. The research employs qualitative and quantitative methods to examine four dimensions of current photojournalist practice in the Czech Republic: professional identity, production process, ethical standards, and working conditions in light of rising competition. Key findings show passionate and dedicated professionals facing challenges in digitalization and limited resources. Respondents prioritize authenticity and autonomy but highlight the concerns about the underrepresentation of photo departments and the impact of competition in photojournalism. Nevertheless, they express high job satisfaction, viewing their profession as prestigious and rewarding. This research sets a foundation for future longitudinal studies of Czech photojournalists by providing arguments for several concerns, such as gender disparity, technological advancements, and audience perception of visual narratives.
Evolution of markups: The case of the Czech Republic
Jurišta, Jakub ; Bajgar, Matěj (advisor) ; Petřík, Theodor (referee)
This thesis aims to state the picture of markups in the Czech Republic. Most of the research has been done in the United States, and many remaining studies have been done globally. However, global studies do not have high-quality data to determine the actual trend in some countries. The main finding is that the mean markup increases over time, where the main drivers of it are the upper percentile firms, which see a significant increase in their markups. Therefore, most firms see no increase in their markups. The trend is also claimed to be within all industries, not between them. We use high-quality data which covers all firms in the Czech Republic. Using the production approach, we estimate markups for 55 869 firms from 74 industries from 2012 to 2020. The goal is to show markups on three different levels and to see if the defined trend corresponds to the Czech one. This thesis is one of the first studies using high-quality data outside the United States, and to have an overview of an actual markup trend in Europe, more studies like this should be done in other countries.
