Emigration motif in Pnin and other novels by Vladimír Nabokov

This bachelor's thesis explores the theme of emigration in Vladimir Nabokov's fiction, primarily through the analysis of one of his English-written novels Pnin. Many works by Nabokov display autobiographical features, which is why a large part of this work provides Nabokov's biography with an emphasis on its possible influence on his career. In the theoretical part of the thesis the biography of Vladimir Nabokov and the typical features of his work are introduced with a preceding short overview of the term emigration and the characterization of the first Russian wave of emigration. The practical part of the thesis provides a deeper analysis of the novel Pnin through the prism of emigration motif and its sub-themes which are realized in Nabokov's work. The last part of the thesis is a brief conclusion about how Nabokov created an image of the Russian emigrant.
Social aspects of the forced community in Terezin

This study deals with aspects of the everyday social reality of the forced community in the Terezin ghetto in 1941-1945. It is a microsociological introspection of the life of the prisoners that lived in the ghetto. It aims to define social factors that influenced the lives of people that were stigmatized, fought for their lives and lived in border-line situations. The research part of the study uses biographical method. It uses 10 recorded testimonials of survivors - former Terezin prisoners. The research was carried out by means of partly structured interviews. The questions dealt with internal and external factors that created the daily reality of this forced community. The aim was to map their subjective perception of life conditions, social ties, both negative and positive factors and further personal utterances of the narrators. The testimonies serve for better and deeper understanding of the Terezin reality. The factors that affected the community in a negative way included fear of the unknown, fear of loosing close friends and relatives, very bad life conditions that strongly affected the negative mind-set of people and loss of moral values. In contrast, the positive factors included culture and sports that were welcomed by the prisoners as they allowed them to shift aside gloomy thoughts....
Hidalgo or John Gibson Lockhart's Biography

The thesis is about life and personality of John Gibson Lockhart (1794-1854), who was a notable Scottish literary critic and biographer. The first part of the thesis is a brief narrative of his life. The second part is dedicated to the history and manners of Lockhart's family, which was closely related to Sir Walter Scott. This family is compared with a typical family of the period. The third part is tracing Lockhart's influence over the Scottish national movement.

This diploma thesis is about residents who live in the Lesser Town, the historic center of Prague. It focuses on the changes perceived by residents that took place during their lifetime. Work is based on literature and qualitative research in the form of biographical interviews. The theoretical part deals with the concepts of identity, tourism, gentrification, genius loci and ageing which are essential for understanding the changes identified in the analytical part. The analytical part is divided into seven units: changes of the atmosphere of the Lesser Town, its inhabitants, living environment, housing stock, changes of people who have shared their stories with me and more global changes that had influenced the Lesser Town. The work also describes which problems and benefits related to life in the Lesser Town do communication partners perceive.

This master's degree thesis, adhering to the genre of contemporary history studies, depicts the lifestory of Ivan M. Havel. Theoretically it is grounded in personalism, especially regarding to works of Ch. Mounier and M. Scheler and establishes as the primary point of reference the phenomena of individual personality, uniquely embedded into the surrounding social world. From this basic tenet the explanation is built towards the understanding of general categories, using the contexts and traditions, in which the personality had been engulfed. This thesis makes use of both oral history method and archival sources and documents study. Ivan M. Havel can be understood within enduring context of his family's intellectual, civic, political and entrepreneurial tradition, where several specific phenomena stand out. First the non-partisan spirituality, second the emphasis, laid of socially responsible conduct of business; third the stress, laid on achieving broad education, going beyond established domains and disciplines and fourth the sociability, spanning over all of these attributes. Hermeneutic analysis of the Augustin Ujević's poetry (1930/1945)

Augustin (Tin) Ujević (1891/1955) belongs to the most important Croatian poets. This thesis proposes to think of Ujević's life, work and view of world against background of his poetry from the 1930s and first half od 1940s by the year 1945, when the regime of then Yugoslavia forbade him to publish. During this period he published two anthologies of poetry, Auto na korzu (1932) and Ojađeno zvono (1933), both of which form skeleton of this work, and as well two collections of essays, Skalpel kaosa (1938) and Ljudi za vratima gostionice (1938); both of them have been keystones of study of Ujević's contemplations about literature and life. Theoretical and metodological resource of this work is interpretation in the sense of hermeneutical philosophy of W. Dilthey, H. G. Gadamer and P. Ricoer.
Transformations of tramping movement after 1989

The bachelor thesis "Transformations of tramping movement after 1989" investigates changes, which the tramping movement underwent after the fall of the Communist regime. Tramps were persecuted before 1989 and could freely express themselves only in very limited ways. The work attempts to answer the question, of how tramps have coped with the new freedom and how it changed the movement itself. The research was carried out by qualitative means, because current tramping is almost totally neglected in expert literature. The method of autobiographical narrative interview was followed throughout the data collection process. It allows one to analyze the changes mentioned by the informants in the context of their life story. The empirical part of the thesis presents the changes of tramping, their origins, and their evaluations from the narrators' perspectives. The part also investigates the impact of tramping itself on their lives and the changes of their perception of the movement throughout life. Despite tramping not being officially banned nowadays, tramping suffers significant hardship from state and national park rangers.
